How to color flag messages with different colors

 This person was using my PC and I saw this different color tags/flags to different messages while I accidently glaced at his gmail account. I asked him but he didn't seem to know how he has different colors tags.

 

Any input?

If you left-click on the "box" in front of the label name below
Compose Mail (the selected label will then contain a downward-pointing
arrowhead) you will be shown a palette from which you can choose a
colour for that label.

You can have different colors for your Labels, or you can have
different colors for the Stars (when you mark a message by starring
it).

The colored stars are called Superstars, and they are a Gmail Labs
feature (must be enabled first). They can have different colors
and/or different shapes.
