I love gmail. I love all the features and its user friendly
application. But I hate one and only one aspect of it.....it tends to
read my email and then have ads accordingly right above my composed
emails or inbox. To top it, they are negative ads for something I
positively believe in !!!!! Let me give an example (hypothetical) and
you might understand why I hate it ---- let 's say if I am writing
about Hinduism in my email.....and let's assume I like Hinduism---it
still gives some negative and stupid ads saying "know the shocking
truth about Hinduism" blah blah..............i really hate gmail for
that.

All you smart google techs....please help me out if you know how to
stop it from reading, misjudging and then throwing negative
unnecessarily.

Thanks!

First off, we are not Google techs, we are simply users like yourself.  Secondly, that is how GMail ads work.  GMail scans your email for keywords and displays ads that it believes are relevant to the topic of the email you are currently reading.  It's similar to how ads are produced on a Google search.

Yeah, there are ads. As a Gmail user, you agree to have those ads as part of the way Gmail operates:

Source: Gmail Terms of Use
Address : <http://www.google.com/mail/help/terms_of_use.html>

"8.  Advertisements. As consideration for using the Service, you agree and understand that Google will display ads and other information adjacent to and related to the content of your email. Gmail serves relevant ads using a completely automated process that enables Google to effectively target dynamically changing content, such as email. No human will read the content of your email in order to target such advertisements or other information without your consent, and no email content or other personally identifiable information will be provided to advertisers as part of the Service."

Unfortunately, when Gmail parses your message text for content, it's not really able to discern what will or will not please you (or any of us) with respect to the ads' content, merely that they'regarding somewhat relative based on the subject matter, pro or con.  (In a similar situation to yours, I'm sure it's irksome for the members of "Anonymous" who are protesting Scientology to have messages concerning them display ads from the Church of Scientology :-).

I can only suggest that you learn to ignore them, as I have.  There may be ways of blocking them, but, again, that would be violating the terms of use to do so.

What Nick and Chuck have said nails it. I just want to add (just to make sure you're aware of it), that the ads you see are only seen by you. The person you are sending the email to only sees the email that you wrote.

There is one way of of removing them without violating the terms of use: pay for Google Apps for your Domain.

This costs $50 per year, plus the cost of the domain, which is $10 per year. It would also mean changing your email address (or keeping your old address as well, and forwarding mail to the new one).

If this interests you, let us know and we can give more details.

Actually, that's an erroneous attribution for that quote, since I said it, not Sonya. Granted, it's of little to no importance, but it's a pet peeve of mine ... and, yes, I feel much better having picked that nit.  :-)

hey Google techs mean people who are tech savvy with Google.....and
includes users of gmail and google employees

but thanks for all the info. I guess it is terms of use ----where we
really do not have any power in negotiating ----whatever they say we
need to abide by it. But just as a customer feedback.....if any Google
employees are reading this...........please have an option to turn
those stupid negative ads.................i understand ads get revenue
but ads are not my problem----negative ads are.

otherwise gmail is awesome :)

thanks to all

You can report abusive or negative ads here:
http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/request.py?fhc=1&contact_user=other&contact_type=adfeedback&Action.Search=Continue+%C2%BB

It's a bit subjective, so they may not think of it the same way you
do, but at least your voice can be heard and if it's inappropriate,
the advertiser will be removed and you won't have those ads anymore.
