Ever since I got GMail I've been experiancing a problem recieving mail
in Hebrew from e-mail services that do not use Unicode (such as Hotmail
and Yahoo!). This is a very serious problem, as these services are very
popular, and meny of my friends use them to write me mail in Hebrew.
Now, I know Unicode is the future and I'm glad the GMail team chose it,
but there's got to be a way to translate non-Unicode Hebrew to Unicode.
If there is no way to automaticaly recognize the language (which sounds
improbable to me) then at least let the user choose which language
should be used when translating from non-Unicode (like you can do in
Windows).
I know for sure that it is possible to make this work if you put enough
effort into it because Walla.com made it work. This is another service
that offers a 1GB inbox (acctualy the first RELEASED service I've heard
of). They also use Unicode, but being an Israeli company they made sure
it works with Hebrew mail from ANY other service.
Google is aware of this problem for a long while now, because it
appears in their known issues page. I expected them to take care of it
by now. I'm very dissapointed with them for neglecting their
international users.
I'd love to hear any thoughts, or if anybody knows when they plan to
address this issue.
Noam Nelke.
I knew that. Like I mentioned before, this topic is mentioned in known
issues, including the workaround.
This is VERY inconveniant though. I just wish they find a SOLUTION for
this issue instead of a WORKAROUND.
