I feel like I must be blind.

There used to be a way to move a message back to the Inbox. In the
old days, I think Gmail had a button to do it. Then later they
embedded it within something like their Labels button. More recently,
it was a button that came and went.

Now I can't find it at all. I can't find any way to move a
message/thread back to the Inbox! (Well, aside from drag-and-drop,
which for various reasons I'd prefer not to use.)

Where did it go?

If I am in the Spam "folder" and select or open a message, I get the button.

If I go to one of my Labels and select or open a message, that button
isn't there. And I can't find it in any of the drop-down menus
either. PITA!!

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Andy

While viewing the email, click on the "move to" drop down button.  That should display not only your personal labels but also inbox, spam, and trash.

Quick workaround, I don't honestly know why the button disappears in a specific label view, nor does it show up in the "Move to" list when viewing a specific label, but do a search for the message you want to move back to the inbox using the search bar, then check the selection box. Move to Inbox should now appear. Let me know how that works for you.

Yeah, I looked there.  Not there.  Spam and Trash were the only two choices.

Even if that were it, why, oh why, does Gmail feel the need to bury it when they had a button to do it?

I guess you already checked that the labeled email you're looking at isn't already in the Inbox.  For me that's the only time that Inbox isn't listed on the move to drop-down.

Yup. Roger.

Looking at it now, what I see is that Inbox does show up in the
Move-to button menu (which it did not yesterday or earlier today), but
of course not in the Labels button menu.

I am hesitant in general to use the Move-to button, because it's my
understanding that it will effectively move the conversation out of
the "folder" (label) it was in if you were looking at the contents of
that folder/label. So if I was looking inside label:abc and I use
Move-to, it would remove the label abc from that conversation ...
which is generally NOT what I want to do (aside from moving something
out of the Inbox or out of Spam).

Whereas the "Move to Inbox" button did not have that behavior.

Also, I see that the "Move to Inbox" button does not appear if I have
clicked on a label (and then select a message) ... or if I search for
that label ... but it does appear if I am in All Mail, or if I search
for "L:abc" (rather than "Label:abc").

Arrgh! Why couldn't Google be consistent about the user interface?
(Some Google software jockey is probably sitting there thinking, how
cool would it be if I make the button appear only in these
circumstances but not in those.)

It just occurred to me that the "Move to Inbox" button was a Gmail
Lab, not a feature of Gmail itself. (No, wait, I just checked, and it
is not a Gmail Lab anymore.)

Did this change in the last year? I'm trying to move an email from the Updates to the Primary tab and "Primary" is the only tab unavailable when selecting "Move To". I am losing so much important information in these ridiculous tabs.

Wes,

Do you see the + sign at the right end of the list of tabs?  Click on the + sign, deselect all of the tabs except for Primary, and click Save.  Now all of your emails will appear in one inbox listing.

When it's there, it works real nice.  But as I explained already, sometimes that choice was not there.

Hence my question, nine months ago.

The problem does not seem to have returned.

Andy,

The only time I've not seen the "Move To" option not be there is when I'm in a set of search results.  This makes sense as there's no "one place" to move things from.  I just add a label and hit the archive key (e for me; and probably the default).

Had a same problem and the solution is surprisingly simple. Select the messages you want to move to your Inbox and use your mouse on one of them to drag and drop them onto Inbox label shown in left "direstory/label" structure.
That's all.
