How do I retrieve archived messages. I do not see anywhere in Gmail
basic where it allows you to do anything but archive the messages, but
now I want to look at them!

In addition to All Mail (which a couple others have already posted),
they are also available in which ever label you applied, as well as
through using the search functionality.
