I have been using Outlook 2003 with gmail successfully for almost 3
years. Last Friday, at about 4pm I started getting this message:
Task 'pop.gmail.com - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) :
'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server.
If you continue to receive this message, contact your server
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I've made no changes to my settings, and double and triple checked my
account settings in Outlook. Pop is enabled in gmail. I went through
the common errors list and then the troubleshooting guide on the gmail
help site. I followed the instructions to do a telnet check which
also failed Then I received this message:

The error you're experiencing indicates that your network is blocking
access to Gmail's POP servers. Please contact your local network
administrator or your Internet Service Provider's customer support
department for further instructions.

I then contacted my ISP who said they are not blocking access so they
believe the problem is with Google. I work at a hotel and my ISP
keeps all ports open because of the high amount of users we have on
the wireless network. I've run out of things to do.

Why would it suddenly just stop working after all this time?
Can anyone recommend something to me?

Thank you.

I would suggest that this was the best piece of advice that you have already been given.

Please contact your local network administrator

Your hotels IT department, should either a. have an answer for you or b. be able to investigate further and find out what the problem is.

We don't really have an IT person, it's generally me. We have a small
staff - I did speak with our internet provider and they said it's
impossible that Port 995 could be blocked because they keep all ports
open and accessible.

I may have to take my laptop in to the Geek Squad! :)

Ok, perhaps yull manage to solve the problem before the geeks step into action. My idea is perhaps you installed some software that makes changes to your windows firewl that in this case could be the problem. But in other view, this wouldnt be a problem for gmail, POP..., just check if your firewall is blocking port 995, and go from there....

Thank you for the post. I tried disabling my firewall altogether, and
it still won't connect... even tried manually adding the Port, still
no avail. I'm beginning to think something got tweaked with our
wireless router... who knows. So frustrating!!

OK, have you tried resetting your Router. Failing that then yes it would certainly appear that something has changed.

However, first hard reset the router.  If you still have a problem, connect to the router with aan ethernet cable. If that works and the wireless doesn't you know where the problem lies.  If you still have a problem, then I would suspect somehting in the Outlook settings. If possible try another PC.

Good luck.

In case you haven't solved the problem already ...

One thing to try is to manually login to your Gmail account. Once or twice
I've seen Gmail randomly throw in an extra level of security by asking me a
second question (or one of the "captcha" squiggly letters thingies) when I
login, and when this happens, it won't accept POP logins either until you
answer the "captcha" correctly, which can only be done manually.

Ok, im sory. In this case i was compleatly wrong. Dont forget, im just trying to help. The firewall idea was "amater". Becouse google has its own servers, routers... that have nothing to do with your personall firewall, router...
Have you checked your recently installed software?
I also have a wireless modem for my notebook computer, and i have many problems with it. One of the reasons is probably, that the modem uses UMTS -  EDGE  protocol, and the bandwith is poor from my provider. So i guess they use ale options in their aresenall to prevent torrent trensfer upload and download... You jave to understand that the cash flow for these companies is in the QoS and SLA contracts, so they take care of these, while neglecting us, all the other users. They block -. close ports, options.... And if your not Kevin Mitnick, thats usualy all you can do about it. Cry, cry and once more cry.

I have the same problem and, interestingly, it is intermittent with
everything remaining the same on my end.
Also the problem persists when using different wi-fi and ISP's.
Any more suggestions?

As a final desperate measure I added a new Gmail account to my Mac
mail 3.5 and told it to use the automatic setup settings and IT
WORKED!
