For those of you who have been following my saga of frustration in no longer getting sound with the Gmail Notifier (see the posts mingled under "Custom Chat Status Messages"), I have something new and amazing to report.

First, a brief recap:  I downloaded GN at least 2 years ago and was notified of new messages as I was supposed to:  via sight and sound, which is what I wanted.  Eventually, the sound notification disappeared, and I tried everything members of this group suggested to get it back, including uninstalling and re-installiing GN (many times).  Tonight, I did this again (the same version, 1.0.25, that I had before) and here is what is happening now:  I get 2 notifications for each message I self-tested!  The first is the visible but silent one I've had now for over a year.  The second arrives perhaps a minute later, is visible, and has sound!!!  I'm kind of stunned!  Any ideas as to why this is happening?  More important, how can I just get the second notification?

You can bet I'll be looking for your input!  And, yes, I will live with double notifications if I have to.

One more question:  Any reason to have both GN and GT?  I mainly e-mail, occasionally chat (IM-style), and always want sight-sound new e-mail notifications.  I do nothing with video.

As always, thanks so much!  ~Dodo

And now, less than 24 hours later, I no longer get the double notification.  Back to just the visual notification, and I don't even know if it's from GN or GT.  (Sigh)  ~Dodo

Hi Dodo

You have 2 notifications because you have both Google Talk and
Notifier installed. As has been mentioned to you before, Google
Notifier is an old app and has been superceded by Google Talk. As such
it is not compatible with Windows Vista or 7. You can see this on the
download page, it reads 'Requires Windows 2000 or XP'.

In my experienbce, the sound is only once. Unless you're siotting right there to hear it, it's gone.
The visual clue is the color of the icon in the task bar; it changes from white to blue.

Hi, Marko--

Sometime during the night it did occur to me that perhaps the two notifications were because of GN and GT.  However, their appearance is identical, yet in the taskbar, GT has a red envelope icon and GN's is blue.  When I was receiving the double notifications, both were blue.  As you may have read in my later post, the doubles have ceased.  I believe I also wrote in one of my marathon posts that I discovered--to my wonder--that GN is for Windows 2000 or XP, as you have pointed out.  Back when I installed it a couple of years ago, that somehow escaped me.  Yet, despite my ignorance, I was getting sight and sound notifications for a period of time (lasting far longer than last night's epidsode!).  When I sought help from the group, I don't recall anyone's pointing out this important info.  Obviously, then, it makes no sense to continue with GN on this desktop.  I'm going to uninstall it (yet again!), but I will let it remain on the laptop as long as it continues to function there.  It shouldn't, of course, because the laptop has Windows 7.

Thank you, as usual, for your thoughtful and helpful input.  ~Dodo

Exactly, Jim.  But that's what I want--to be notified via sight and sound for each message that may arrive while I am at the computer.  After all, what do I care otherwise?  I just responded to Marko that in my taskbar, the envelopes already are a particular color, red for GT and blue for GN.  So I'm not sure why they appear differently on yours.  ~Dodo

I forgot, Marko, that last night I also found the following which added to my confusion (red emphasis by me):

"To use the Gmail Notifier, you need Windows 2000, Windows XP, or a more recent version of Windows. (Download the Notifier*)." Of course, Vista is a "more recent version of Windows," so I went for it.

Also:  "The Notifier is not compatible with Windows ME at this time, but we look forward to offering support for more operating systems in the future."  What is (was?) Windows ME?

The above quotes are from:  http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=9429

Then John recently suggested http://www.gmailnotifier.com/, which I also just tried last night.  That was the one that established itself on my husband's "side" (a separate user on the desktop) even though I downloaded it from "my side."  As you can see, the OS info isn't given here, although I think I found it somewhere last night.  ~Dodo
