Label drop down menu is very slow

Hi Gmail people!

I am a heavy labels user and while the new labels interface is pretty
sweet, it seems awfully slow to open the window for the first time.
By slow I mean about 5 seconds, by which time I'm actually wondering
if it is going to load at all!

My intuition suggests that the system is loading my labels (about 100)
the first time, and then it seems to work okay after that. And by
okay I mean it comes up sub-second, but there is still a noticeable
delay before the pull down menu comes up.

Any ideas?

Delete some labels? :D

I am going to believe that your intuition is correct and it's just taking a little time to load up the initial list of labels.  However, you could try clearing your cache to get a fresh download of the code... couldn't hurt, and that seems to solve a lot of problems in GMailland :)

I'm having the same problem. I've got over 200 labels (thats the
whole point right?)

It takes about 10-15 seconds for the labels drop down to drop down.
It will be pretty quick unless I go to a message.. then it has to
reload again.

Interestingly, on my netbook (with way less processing power) it only
takes about 5 seconds for the initial load. Both machines are running
firefox. I cleared the cache on the desktop.... no love.

I don't really consider deleting labels to be a great solution. The
whole idea is that I can quickly find all the message related to
specific job. I jun 40 jobs/month and often refer back to data from
past jobs up to a year old.

Grease Monkey + Better Gmail worked much faster.. but it hasn't been
updated yet.

You probably run different extensions on you the slow machine, or they
were installed in a different order. Specifically, Adblock Plus is
known to cause this problem, and many users have confirmed that
disabling it fixes the problem. At least one user has reported that
removing and re-installing Adblock Plus allowed it to work correctly.

Confirmed.

Right! I removed Adblock Plus, and now the labels menu is sub-second
on the first try.

For me, re-installing ABP brings back the slow labels menu, so I'm
going to keep it disabled until the ads do me in.

I attempted to resolve the issue with the ABP False Positive section
in their guide, but it didn't work.

I whitelist GMail in my ABP and have not had any problems. Perhaps
that's the best solution, it's like ABP is off for just that site.

You're lucky then. Whitelisting gmail on ABP didn't change anything
for me. I have to disable it completely for the lag to stop.

I have the same problem, I only have 40 labels, and I'm using Opera
(so Adblock is not an issue). What happens is that the menu appears
right away, but in the wrong place (over towards the left); it then
pauses for about 3-5 seconds before reappearing where it's supposed to
be.

It's terribly frustrating.

Can you post your whitelist string? I used hosted apps so maybe my
whitelist string has to be different, but I tried this to no effect:

@@gmail.com
@@google.com

Difficult for two reasons, I'm in Chrome right now so no ABP, and I
didn't actually create a string, I just used the "Whitelist this whole
site" menu option. I'd suspect though that your hosted apps do need a
different string since they have their own unique URLs. Perhaps
something like this:
@@/wozney.ca/

Any solution on this yet?

The labels pull-down delay is immensely frustrating!

Are you using Adblock Plus?  If you are, then there has already been a solution posted.
