Hi everyone:

I have been using Gmail for several years and enjoy it very much. I am
fairly computer literate, but far from an expert.

I have intermittently tried to Gmail-load my old emails from when I
used a school based web account (mostly with Outlook Express, now
stored in several large MBX files) but using Gmail loader has never
worked for me.

I dislike using email clients now (used to use Outlook express,
briefly used Incredimail and Thunderbird, hated them), and would
rather not use them if I don't need to. Preferably using only Gmail's
web-based interface, I have the following questions, and would please
like some help:

1. What are the best setting on how I can get gmail loader to work?

2. Should I use another Gmail server? (DNSstuff doesnt seem to be
working.)

3. Is there any way a firewall could be interfering with this? (I am
doing this on my home computer(s) and basically have windows firewall
and some commercially available programs such as Zonealarm, Norton,
etc. I use Optimum online for my cable and internet.)

4. Does anyone know a way around the timestamp issue - I would love to
keep the original timestamps.

5. Are there any other programs or methods that can do this besides
Gmail Loader?

Thank you,

Joe

I don't know Gmail-Loader even works at all any more... as far as I
know it hasn't updated in years and there has been huge changes to
Gmail since then.

If you're willing to use a desktop client for just the time it takes
to upload you can get the problem solved and save all of the original
info (including time stamps). To do it:
1. Enable IMAP on Google
2. Configure the desktop client to access Gmail.
3. Import the MBX files into the client
4. Drag the emails over to wherever you want in the Gmail folder listing.
5. Wait
6. And wait.
7. Disable IMAP and use the web interface!

This is actually what I ended up deciding to do. It's working beautifully using Thunderbird. I have all my emails being loaded in as we speak.

Thanks!

I have been doing just what Ryan suggested. However, I now have some
new problems:

When I try to transfer my old "sent" folder to the Gmail sent folder,
it doesnt seem to work. It also it problematic with an old Gmail inbox
folder I have.

There are also some cases where there are login failures. I don't know
why. I set thunderbird to store my password and it still did it. It
seems to happen where there are either large folders or some old Gmail
Drive files.

All these emails originate from mbox files.

Any ideas?

Put the sent in all mail or whatever. It may be screwing up because
Gmail just put messages which match the search "from:me" in sent, so
when you try to assign to a folder which is a search it gets confused.
