Hi all, I've just had to re-install Win 7 together with all my progs.
No problems anywhere on my entire computer except that the "Delete all
Spam now" option at the top of my gmail page has disappeared! I am
having to laboriously tick each box before hitting the delete forever
button. Anyone else had this happen and anyone know how to get it
back? Tedious or what? :-)

I don't bother deleting my spam. Once it's in the Spam "folder" it's
out of sight. It doesn't bother me if I leave messages sitting there
for 30 days until they automatically go away. If you like, you can
mark them as read, then it's not as obvious that they are there.

So, I'm not sure I ever had a "Delete all Spam now" option. I don't
remember it; but my brain cells are old. (Well, maybe it was there
once, in an old version of the Gmail interface, which was long since
upgraded to a newer one.)

What I remember is that I had to highlight messages in the Spam
"folder" and then click the "Delete forever" button.

Maybe it's just me, but wholesale "delete everything" buttons are just
too dangerous. It's like having a loaded gun, cocked and pointed at
your head (or foot, if you prefer).

You shouldn't need to click on every message. Just click the check
box at the top (above the first message), and that will select all of
them.

Alternatively, click the top message's checkbox, then hold down the
shift key and click the bottom message's checkbox, which should
highlight all messages between the first and last (though this might
depend on features of your web browser and/or how you are logged in).

Is it possible you are logging in with the "basic HTML" interface now?
Or that you had been doing that previously and are now using the
"standard" interface? See the options at the bottom of the page once
logged in.

I've still got that link. Still, as Bill pointed out, you can click in the box to the left of the "Delete Forever" button to select all of the spams on the first screen, then click he "Delete Forever" button.  Two clicks, same as clicking on the "Delete all spam messages now" link and then clicking on the "Are you sure" button. The only difference is if you ahve more than 100 spams, then you have more than one screen. I would definitely make sure which option it shows at the bottom of your screen, "Gmail view: standard | turn on chat | turn off buzz | older contact manager | basic HTML  Learn more" to see if you are in Standard view or basic HTML.
Hmm, I hadn't realized I had buzz on. Thanks for asking this question, I might never have noticed if I hadn't copy-pasted that section into this replay!

Further... even with the link gone, if you have more than one page, after doing the select all, there should be a link to select all on all pages, so only 1 more click to get them all.

I too am fastidious about cleaning up the spam folder instead of letting it wait for the 30 day mark (makes it easier on me to look for false positives), but that shouldn't be a problem.  I think Sean's suggestion is the best, you might have slipped into an older view mode.

That is exactly why I bother deleting spam. So I never have to check the same spam twice for false positives. And to be fair, it wasn't my suggestion - I was repeating Andy's suggestion, although I think I mis-attributed it. sorry Andy.

I still have the original delete button. Also I have the arrow that
tels me to select all. Both work for me.

I believe this to be 'browser' problem. I run Linux Ubuntu 9.10 and
with the Firefox that came with ver 3.6.13.

Peace............ed

Actually, I was referring to the suggestion to check the links at the bottom, which I'm pretty sure was yours. :)
