Hello, Group--

It's been a while.  I'm coming out of hibernation to ask you about Drafts as a label.  I presently have two drafts saved, but the label along the side of the page says (1).  Oh!  For some reason--perhaps writing to you!--it just became (2).  However, I've just saved this as a draft, and it still shows (2) instead of (3).  Also, even if I mark all the drafts unread, the label will remain unbold.  It happens to be bold now, and I don't know why.  I just re-saved this message, and the (2) is still there.  In short, how is this particular label supposed to work?  The Help section--didn't (help).

Well, I see now the Drafts label goes bold when I am in Drafts.  Presently I have 2 drafts saved, including this one.  But Drafts has (1) after it.  Also, I just clicked on Sent Mail, and now both labels are in bold although only the contents of Sent are visible.  Finally, marking both drafts as unread did not affect the (1) showing.  ??

In my experience, the Drafts label is bold whenever I have saved
drafts. It makes no difference whether they are marked read or
unread.

The moment you start editing a new message or reply, the Drafts count
goes up by one.

I wonder if your two saved Drafts have the same subject and are
considered part of one conversation? It might explain why your count
showed as (1).

The other thing I've noticed, is if I have any Canned Responses saved
... they are saved to Drafts (but hidden?) and might affect the
message count. Occasionally I need to login with the HTML version and
then the Drafts look different, probably because the HTML login
doesn't support the Canned Responses lab.

Hi D

The reason the drafts count goes up by one as you type your message is that Gmail automatically saves your message as you type. If you look up next to the 'Discard' button you'll see something like this:

I know the Drafts label is always bold if you select it that way in
the Labels Settings. That's the option to have the label show only
when there's a new draft. I have it so that Drafts always shows on
the left side of my Gmail page. I have seen the Drafts count go up by
one, but when I wrote my original post, I had two drafts already
saved, and only (1) showed next to the label on the left. As I
recall, Andy, my two saved drafts were on different subjects.

I understand that Gmail automatically keeps saving a draft if I
continue working on it, Marko. But if it's the same draft, wouldn't
the number remain (1)? Also, as I previously wrote, I had saved one
draft more than the number reflected. Finally, I had never paid much
attention before as the way the label worked seemed "normal" to me,
e.g., the number was accurate. But I had started to notice that this
time something was different. The more attention I paid, the more
sure I was. I may have to do some further experimenting. ~Dodo

At this moment, I have one draft saved.  There is no (1) next to the label Drafts on the left side of the page.  After typing that sentence, I went to another label without saving this as a draft.  It did save, and there now is a (1) showing but two drafts in existence unless this no longer counts as a draft because I am actively working on it.  Oh well.  I was just curious--as usual--about what is going on.  The important factor is that drafts are being saved.  I just can't rely on the number in the list.  Incidentally, right now Drafts is in bold.  It wasn't a few moments ago.

To me, Read/Unread doesn't seem to apply conceptually to a draft --
after all, if it was you who wrote the draft, how could it be "unread"? ;-)
