I got a gmail account a few months back and was enjoying it. I even
made the swithc and it became my primary email. But now every time i
try to login i get this message:

>>We're currently performing some unexpected maintenance on >>your
account. While we can't predict exactly how long it >>will take,
we're working as quickly as we can to restore >>access to your
email--apologies for the inconvenience.

>>If you have questions, please contact us at
gmail->>maint...@google.com.

This has been going on for a week. I wrote them and this was the
response:

Hello,

>>Your Gmail account has been disabled due to a technical >>issue. Our
engineers are working diligently to find a >>solution so that you can
regain access to your account. >>Unfortunately, we cannot offer an
exact timeframe of when >>your account will be re-enabled. Please try
logging in to >>your Gmail account again in a few days.
Try again in a few days!!??!!

Never even heard of this. I guess you find your account to be a good
Ginnie-pig... :)

I'e heard about this from 2 people now. One had his account back after
a week or so.... no idea as to 'why' they locked you out. Just hope
and pray it lets you in again. :)

I had a slightly similar experience. Mine went out one Friday night
and didn't come back until the wee hours of Monday. I got different
messages than you. In my case it sounded like I was getting connected
to the server, but then it was having trouble locating or reading my
mail files. mail sent to be during the outage eventually showed up,
but some people got warning messages about pending delivery.

I got messages from Google staff a full week later that totally missed
the point of the problem I was having (beside the fact that I wouldn't
have been able to read their messages anyway while my account was down,
duh).

I know it's beta, but maybe part of the learning experience of it being
beta should be to develope better response mechanisms for when things
go wrong. A problem report button ON the login screen would be a good
start. Also a way to specify an alternate contact email address for
when your gmail just isn't working.

My experience is that I would get the message loading on the browser
and nothing happens. It continued for 2 days.

At least this experience leaves room for some hope. Mine didn't go
well at all, it seems I've lost my mail archives/e-mail addresses
permanently.
