This has been going on for a week. I wrote them and this was the
response:

I got messages from Google staff a full week later that totally missed
the point of the problem I was having (beside the fact that I wouldn't
have been able to read their messages anyway while my account was down,
duh).
I know it's beta, but maybe part of the learning experience of it being
beta should be to develope better response mechanisms for when things
go wrong. A problem report button ON the login screen would be a good
start. Also a way to specify an alternate contact email address for
when your gmail just isn't working.
