is anyone else having problems typing while composing a letter in the
"new version" of g-mail? i have a HP with windows vista and while
typing, i will have letters skip or not appear on the note or if i try
to put a space in sometimes, it will not put one inbetween words. this
does not happen when i go to WORD or POWERPOINT nor will it happen if
i log in from another computer to check my mail and send a note out.
it is not happening now as i write this message. it will also not
happen if i change to the "old version" of g-mail. it only happens in
the "NEW VERSION' of g-mail. i have tried disabling labs as was
suggested with no change. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Have you tried clearing cache and cookies. With GMail being a java
application, it's possible a corrupt cache could be causing the
problem.

Javascript, not Java. Sorry, I couldn't let that one go. :)

Yes I am having this problem too -- I also have an HP with Vista (a
brand new dv9925nr) and am experiencing the exact same issue.

It is driving me crazy!! I have search the web to no avail...oddly,
everything was fine until two days ago, when suddenly Internet
Explorer windows starting opening spontaneously, and since then, this
problem started. Probably unrelated? I am going to try clearing
cookies/cache... any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

You mentioned this doesnt happen when you change to the "old version"

how do you do this?

in the upper right hand corner of g-mail, there is a tab that says old version. just click on that and will automatically put you into the old version. the bad part is once you leave it and go back in, it is in the new version again.

To sidestep that problem, use either of these URLs to login to Gmail and get
the old version:

http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1 or
https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1

Thank you! I also have an HP running vista and also started having
the same problem this week. Changing to the older version fixed it
immediately!!

Andy, Thank you for that URL information. I started having this
typing problem within the last 2 days also. My computer guru friend
thought perhaps someone was running a program on my computer to access
information so I cancelled my credit card then spent hours on-line
with a Norton person who found no reason and suggested I try gmail.
As you know, you can't email support with this issue---very
frustrating. When I saw the posts from others having this problem, it
was like a mirage for this computer dunce. I clicked on your first
URL and added it to my favorites, deleted the old one, and I am all
set. Even my husband is happy since I won't have my replacement
credit card for 10 days. Bonster

Thanks! I just started having this problem yesterday. I have never
been so frustrated! However, I tried your suggestion and I no longer
have a problem. Why on earth are we all having this problem now?
I've had vista for about 6 months and have been using e-mail through
google and this only began yesterday! I sure hope someone can figure
out the problem and fix it! Thanks for your suggestions!

Your entries solve this mystery: I have just recently been having the
same letter/spacing problem in my gmail. Frustrating hardly covers it,
for a touch typist. So the only solution for the moment is to go back
to the old version of gmail? I have a Sony laptop with Vista Business.
No problem with Word, Hotmail, Yahoo, Verizon or CompuServe mail. Is
Google working on this? Anybody have any pull with them? Thanks, Chaz.

To answer your questions in the order asked:
Going to an old version is not a solution, but a stop-gap. If
clearing cache and cookies does not solve it, nor does disabling
labs/etc, but changing back to the old version does, then you've found
a bug which must be reported to ensure it gets fixed.

No idea, and really no way to tell. All we can know is if people are
reporting it with good details. I've reported bugs before with good
details and found them fixed in under 24 hours, so since this problem
has been going on for a couple weeks, I'd have to guess either it's
not getting reported, it's solving itself when people clear
cache/cookies, or it's a REALLY hard bug for them to isolate and fix.
I suspect the first and second more than the third.

Yes... you do. As a Beta Tester you have as much pull with Google as
the rest of us Beta Testers do. Filing suggestions and bug reports
are the best way to exercise your pull and make sure this product
winds up the way we'd all like it to be.

Hi
I was "relieved" to hear that I was not the only one having the
problem with typing in the new gmail. I have the exact same problems
and yes, it is very frustrating. It doesn't happen in any other word
processing applications. I am also using Windows Vista and I am
wondering why Google Gmail isn't trying to correct the problem!! I'll
try changing to the old version as my friends on gmail don't seem to
have the same problem.
Good luck.

No problem here with the new version.  Have you tried another computer.  If it is a bug, then it certainly seems that it is a bug caused by a conflict with something else on your computer.

Double check cache and cookies.  Check that you have no FF plug ins or such that could be causing it. Check with another browser.  If it still occurs, then it is likely to be another program on your PC.

I don't know - the fact that it happens with the current version of Gmail, but stops when they switch to the old version does make it sound like a bug that needs to be reported, through the Help section, as Zack pointed out. However, the fact that lots of people are not experiencing it in the current version of Gmail backs up your suggestion that it is some kind of conflict with something on their computers. In that case, going through the Help section is still the best course of action, to either find the solution, or to report it to Google so that they can publish the solution once it is discovered.

The fact that it's "fixed" in the old version supports that it could
be cache/cookies (since old version uses different cache/cookies than
the newer version does), or a bug related to a newer feature, perhaps
even labs. I'd suggest the people having this problem disable labs to
see if that also fixes it, and make sure you include that information
in a bug report. I found that a very details bug report produced a
fix in very little time.

I'd file a report along with you, but I cannot duplicate the problem,
so I can't give them any useful information.

Jonathan,

Please reply to the whole group when trying to reply to a thread.  You simply sent it to one person (the last poster).

This thread is well over a year old, so I have to wonder if the problem is really still there (in that time GMail even dropped the "Beta" tag.  I don't see it listed in Known Issues, and I think it was; as a problem with only Firefox or something like that.

If you're having problems with this in your domains, and users have cleared cache and cookies with no avail, and even changing browsers doesn't solve it for them, then you have a very valid complaint.  While most of us can only click the "Report a Problem" link in the help section, a hosted domain with sufficient users should likely have a dial-in pin.  I'd suggest you exercise that option and get it reported directly.

Google does not, officially, monitor this group or this thread.  It's just a user's group.  You're better off reporting the problem directly.

I'd agree that using the older version is a stop gap solution.

I have just completed a very painful migration of 2 email domains from
our own internal Exchange server to Gmail.

With the exception of a few users who still use Gmail intermittently
through Outlook because of email integration with our CRM, everybody
is using the Gmail web client.
We have over 50 users, most who also use labs for certain features
(Such as nested labels, which is ace) so turning off labs and going
back to the old version is not an option.

Luckily, only a small number are affected by this, but I know I'm
gonna get hell when I tell them there isn't much I can do about it
unless I start turning things off.

In the hope that Google are monitoring this thread, can you please try
and do something about this problem. It may seem minor when only a
couple of people complain about it, but I've been doing quite a bit of
searching about this today, and I reckon it's a bigger problem than
you think.

Take note.

I forgot to mention that I did, at one point, have a very similar/same problem, and it was determined to be related to the browser used, and a later update of the browser did manage to correct it.

Zack, apologies, I did mean to send to the group, not just you.

I can confirm the problem does still exist of type ahead, with up to date browsers and cache/cookies cleared.

I will be reporting this to Google, and will post back here if and when I hear anything back.
