Is there a limit to the number of characters in a Chat status message?  I see only part of some of mine but realize that doesn't mean that's all that others see.  Thanks from ~Dodo

Hello, Group.  It's been a while.  Two questions:  (1) Is there a limit to the number of characters in a Chat status message?  I see only part of some of mine but realize that doesn't mean that's all that others see.  Or is it?  (2) Is there any way to delete some, but not all, custom messages?  Thanks as always.

Hi D

Yes it has been a while, where have you been?

1) There is a limit I'm sure but I have no idea what it is, I was able to happily paste in 1,000 characters as a test. The answer to the second part of this question can be found in the Help, http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=23918
2) Yes, if you download the standalone Talk client, select the custom status and then click on it under your name you can edit it. Delete the contents and hit Enter and it will disappear. Note that for some reason in the standalone client one can only create one custom status message. Creating a new one replaces the last one.

Hi, Marko:

Thank you for the information.  I often (admittedly not always) try to find answers myself, using key words, and wonder how people such as you find the exact place to look.  As for your 1000 characters, you actually counted them?
Obviously, they didn't all appear to you.

Regarding the Chat List status messages, I only do instant-messaging, and that is rare.  I have considered deleting some of my custom messages, but one of the drop-down options is clear custom messages (plural).  I didn't want to delete all.  And just now, experimenting a little while posting this response to you, all my custom messages have disappeared without my having selected that option.  Not happy about that because I had a couple of good quotes.  ~Dodo

Hi Dodo

If you're talking about the link I posted, I found that info under Help on the Google Talk pages, http://www.google.com/talk/
1,000 characters? Easy, I just typed a random pattern of 10 chars, copy and paste that another 9 times, copy the resultant 100 and paste it another 9 times. In reality though, when one mouses over a long status in the Gmail Chat window, only about 500+ characters are displayed (I counted chars per line, then the number of lines), so work on that.

You're going to have to clarify what you did exactly. Did you follow my advice as per answer 2? Out of curiosity, why do you need long status messages?

Hi, Marko:

Smart and logical are you re the 1,000 characters!  As far as what I did to lose the quotes I had, I don't know.  But there werent' that many, and I have now re-created them.  My quotes are not long.  The longest is the AudreyHepburn quotation which now is visible.  I asked about the number of characters because I couldn't see beyond the first few words, but I surmised more was visible to others.

No, I did not follow your directions re #2.  As I explained in my previous post, I don't use chat other than for instant-messaging and your link addressed verbal chat methods.  And on my chat status area, the only option is to clear all custom messages.  Aha!  I just just lost the quotes again and now know what I did the other day which I couldn't answer above.  I was going to copy and paste for you the exact wording about clearing all custom messages.  When I selected that wording from the drop-down menu, all my custom messages disappeared--again!  So I am now going to re-create them yet another time.

OK, Marko, I went to the Help section, also, and found this:  http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=29298

Included is the following, which I think is misleading:

To clear your custom message, click the text under your name in Chat and delete it, or select another message from the status drop-down menu.

The fact is, and I've learned the hard way, we cannot delete just one custom message.  So I now have confirmed (twice? three times?  I've lost count) the answer to one of my original two questions.  ~Dodo

Hi Dep,

The link he sent doesn't have to have anything to do with verbal chat.  The link on the left is the video and voice plug-in; but he specifically said the Talk client, which refers to the software on the right, which is just the stand-alone IM software (which I think people have suggested you install in the past as it can also do new mail notifications for you).

Mouse over any name (including yours) and a window will pop up showing more details, including the full status.

You did not read my instructions properly. See Doc's answer.

Sonovagun!  I just tested it.

With apologies, I will re-read your instructions.  Thank you both.  ~Dodo

You were absolutely right, of course, Doc.  (So what else is new?)  I was looking on the left and not the right.  As it turns out, creating custom status messages right on the Gmail site is preferable to me because I can create multiple custom status messages.  The drawback has been not being able to delete only one.  Incidentally, is there a limit to how many status messages one can create here?  (I just went to Help but could not find an answer.)  Perhaps that goes back to Marko's 1,000 characters; that is, 1,000 characters worth of custom status messages.  ~DEP

Dep,

I don't think Marko was suggesting that you have to change the normal way that you access the chat permenantly.  I took his suggestion to mean, install the talk client, edit/remove your custom message that you want to get rid of, and then close the client, and go back to your normal method of access.

That sounds simple and straightforward enough, Zack.  But that's not usually how things work out for me.  So, for the time being, I'm going to leave things alone as in:  "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."   ~Dodo
