There is a problem with gmail and igoogle on my grandpa's computer..
it just doesn't show all the background colors and other stuff, it's
black and white. Another annoying thing is that when do things like
selecting an address from the address book when composing a mail
message the window with the suggestions has a transparent background,
and that makes it very hard to read the suggestions. I tried opening
his account on my computer and it displays all properly.
How can I fix it?

P.S. I tried opening it with Firefox and with IE and the problem
exists on both.

Have you tried opening your account on his computer? It sounds like the problem is just that computer, but it would completely verify it if yours was messed up on his as well.

My first guess would be that an option regarding overriding designer-specifies colors has been selected. As both IE and Firefox are doing it, it's likely a Windows setting (vs. individual browser preference). Poke around in the accessibility stuff on the control panel for a while. I don't have a Windows computer handy, so I don't know where something like that is.

Google's applications (including Mail) work just find on my Linux and
Windows boxes. Out of curiosity, what is Google Free 411?

It's a directory assistence service that Google is offering which from the sounds of it, is still in pre-beta.  Like everything Google offers, it's free (other than fees your phone/cell company will charge)  Check it out here http://labs.google.com/goog411/

The problem could be his browser version and javascript settings.
also, the suggestion to check browser settings which override web page
colors and fonts is a good suggestion. Install Firefox 2.0 on his
machine and don't let him surf with IE (if he is still using that).

Thank you Ryan, I turned off the high contrast option in the
accessibility menu and it solved the problem completely.
