Today I'm seeing duplicates of two of my groups ("Family" and
"Friends") in the "Groups" drop-down button used to add or remove
contacts to/from groups. These groups do *not* appear twice in the
left pane, but adding to either copy of the group will add it to the
same correct group on the left. However, I can add someone to *both*
of these duplicates, and they will both stick. If I add someone to
both Family groups, for example, it will show this for their groups:

Groups: Family, Family

I have tried purging my cache, tried it with FF3 and IE7, and it shows
in both of them. What's going on?

It seems GMail decided to create some default groups of Family,
Friends, and Coworkers, which have basically become duplicates of what
you have.

I haven't seen this, although I have seen two different "Friends" groups when i forward an item from my Google Reader - one corresponds to the contact group I set up in Gmail, and the other consists of a single person who is not in the actual "Friends" group. Actually, as i look, there are several duplicate contact groups that have zero members. How odd. so far, it has not impacted any functions, so I don't really care about it.

I wouldn't care about it except that it seems to actually be two
groups that are displayed as one. This worries me, especially since
I'm not sure how to go about deleting the extra group without deleting
my own group.

I figured it out. There's a new Family and Friends group *above* the
first divider in the contacts list. I had been using both of these
groups without knowing it since they've been added, so I had a nice
mix between the two lists.

May I suggest that if something like this is rolled out in the future
that you roll user-created lists into the new ones? Or at least
distinguish them better in the Groups drop-down list.

I think that's a good idea - you should go ahead and suggest that to Google.
