How do I make Gmail my default mail application for e-mailing a Word

How do I make Gmail my default mail application?
You can designate Gmail as your default mailto handler. This means that
when you click on any hyperlinked email address, a Gmail compose window
will open so you can send a message to that address from Gmail.
To do so in Windows:
1. Download the Gmail Notifier.
2. Right-click the Notifier icon in your system tray, and select
Options.
3. Check the box next to Use Gmail for internet mailto: links.
4. Click OK.

Does the mailto: Gtalk handling works for you ?
Thunderbird is always my default mail application... but maybe I have to check my Thunderbird configuration

This is easy!!!

Download Gmail Notifier and when you install it, you can check an
option whether to start Gmail for your mailto: links. I did it in my
computer.

As I wrote yesterday, I had done all this:

1. Download the Gmail Notifier.
2. Right-click the Notifier icon in your system tray, and select
Options.
3. Check the box next to Use Gmail for internet mailto: links.
4. Click OK.

It was not OK. My computer still uses Yahoo mail for both internet
mailto and Word mailto.

Then I strongly suspect that Yahoo mail is hijacking those links back.
I'm not familiar with how Yahoo mail is doing it, perhaps Javascript
on their page, perhaps if you're using the Yahoo Toolbar... I honestly
don't know cause I rarely use Yahoo mail, but when I do it doesn't
hijack my mailto: links. My strongest suspicion would be the Yahoo
Toolbar if you use it... It's changed many things on my wife's
computer despite the fact I change it back and she doesn't actively
use it.

I have no Yahoo mail (only Thunderbird with the "default mail reader" option unchecked), and it doesn't work

Internet Explorer does not let us choose gmail as our default email
application:

"To change your default email application manually, follow these steps:

Internet Explorer 6.0
Open Internet Explorer.
Click the "Tools" menu at the top of the browser.
Select "Internet Options" from the Tools menu.
Click the "Programs" tab.
In the Email box, select the email program you wish to use.
Click the "OK" button.
Internet Explorer 5.x
Open Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click "Internet Options."
Click the "Programs" tab.
In the Email box, click the program you want.
Click "OK."
>From now on, whenever you click an email link in a web site, the email
program you have selected will be used automatically."

However gmail is not among the optional choices of the e-mail programs,
provided by Internet Explorer.

I'm pretty sure that you can not make Gmail the default mailer for Word.  Everything that has been suggested here simply handles mailto links.  When you email from Word, there is no link to click, it is just an added feature that takes advantage of Outlook.  The only thing I can think of is to set up Outlook with your Gmail account info.
