Cross-posting here, from another Google support group. A couple of days ago Google caught and prevented an attempt at unauthorized access to my Gmail account, They recommended that I change my Google password, which I did. That went well, in the sense that my Gmail and other Google apps work normally on my  desktop computer. But I can't receive email on my phone any more. When I try to sign in to the phone's Gmail, I get the "wrong password" error. When I type in the new password, I **still** get "wrong password. I've probably tried a dozen  times to put the new password into the phone, but I always get the "wrong password" error. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Bill,

You've probably got 2 step verification enabled in which case you need to enter an app specific password on your phone instead of your actual password.  If you go to your account settings, Sign-in and Security, App passwords, you can generate a random character password that you'll need to enter on your phone.

I see they've also got something called "set up alternative second step" with which you can add a Google prompt on your phone and tap "yes" to sign-in. I haven't tried that yet myself so I'm not sure how it works.  Perhaps you'd still need to enter your new app password first anyway.

Thanks Ken - see my most recent note about this. The problem was a symbol in the new password which required my to use the "symbol" keyboard on the phone.  Once I changed the new password to one which didn't require using the symbol keyboard on the phone, everything works.

After a couple of hours of beating my head against the wall, I found the problem. My new password required me to put in a symbol which wasn't available on the virtual alphanumenic keyboard, but is available on the "symbol" keyboard. That change to the "symbol" keyboard apparently made my new password invalid on the phone. Eliminating that one symbol and changing to one which is available on the alphanumeric keyboard, solved the problem. All is well.

Glad to see you got it sorted. As an aside 2 step verification doesn't require an app specific password, they are 2 separate things.
Just an FYI 😎

Thanks John - I know that, about 2 step verification. I've chosen not to implement it. Nobody but me ever uses this computer, so I think I'm relatively safe unless/until I get successfully hacked. - Bill
