Hi--

I'm sending this while offline.  My understanding is all attachments are supposed to  be downloaded (which I did before leaving home), but I can never open them while offline.  For example, there is a Groupon offer I can't look at.  The message I got when I tried stated it's because I'm not connected to the Internet. So what attachments can I view while offline?

I expect that the types of attachments that you can view while offline are actual files that have been attached to the email, e.g., documents or photos.  If the attachment is a link then clicking on it while offline won't do any good as it's trying to access a location on the internet.

That makes sense, Kenneth.  I asked because the Official Gmail Blog stated on Jan. 12, 2012:  "Improved attachments: All attachments are now downloaded and available for offline use."  Common sense dictates that we can't get attachments related to the Internet while offline, so I guess the word "all" threw me.  Thank you for responding.

You can only view attachments that do not require an Internet connection (ie PDF, word, excel, or text files). A groupon email has remote images in the email that it needs to download to view.

Well, technically, something such as a message from Groupon is not an attachment but rather a web page source HTML within an email. If your Gmail is offline, then there's no way for it to fetch the content of this outside 'web page'.

Attachments are files that are actually encoded into the email, typically by breaking down the file into a bunch of ASCII characters and then rebuilding on the recipient end, if that makes any sense.
