... still, I wonder if viewing emails as conversations could be
optional. I sometimes would like to see all of my emails listed as
individual emails and listed in the order in which they were received.

Click on 'Show search options' at the top, enter " * " (w/o the
quotes) in the 'From' field and press 'Search Mail' button.

Although this suggestion would work, i am not serious about this, it's
more of a joke, actually.
Unfortunately I would have to agree with you that it is a silly
suggestion. :-) But maybe if you could give the Gmail UI designers a
very important reason to allow a NON-CONVERSATION mode/view, then I
think they could add that feature.

Here it is, way into the Future for this thread written way back in 2004. Almost 10 years later and GMail still does not have an option to turn OFF that pesky conversation mode.
On my Google Nexus phone, I get routine email with the same subject. I delete them after reading them. When I get a new email, GMail sticks it AT THE BOTTOM of 2-20 DELETED email messages, and I have to scroll (on a phone mind you) through all those DELETED messages to see my new message at the very bottom.
