I know it's a silly request considering how much the conversation mode
feature for Gmail is promoted and how it's the main feature which
makes Gmail stand out from every other provider ...

... still, I wonder if viewing emails as conversations could be
optional. I sometimes would like to see all of my emails listed as
individual emails and listed in the order in which they were received.

Sure, not a problem.

Click on 'Show search options' at the top, enter " * " (w/o the
quotes) in the 'From' field and press 'Search Mail' button.

Hmmm... when I try that, everything is still grouped by conversation.

delete individual message, one by one. then go to trash. select
everything and move them back to inbox. This should give you separate
messsages.

Although this suggestion would work, i am not serious about this, it's
more of a joke, actually.

Unfortunately I would have to agree with you that it is a silly
suggestion. :-) But maybe if you could give the Gmail UI designers a
very important reason to allow a NON-CONVERSATION mode/view, then I
think they could add that feature.

Here it is, way into the Future for this thread written way back in 2004. Almost 10 years later and GMail still does not have an option to turn OFF that pesky conversation mode. On my Google Nexus phone, I get routine email with the same subject. I delete them after reading them. When I get a new email, GMail sticks it AT THE BOTTOM of 2-20 DELETED email messages, and I have to scroll (on a phone mind you) through all those DELETED messages to see my new message at the very bottom.

Um, yes it does.

Go to Settings > General, scroll down and click Conversation View Off.

I'm surprised you haven't seen or heard about this until now.

The answer to that is either to leave Conversation View off, or to empty the Trash after deleting those unwanted messages.

Bob,

I wrote that email nine years ago and, as Andy said, conversation mode is optional now.

Wow, it doesn't seem like it's been nine years.

Here it is, one year later and I don't have the option you suggest.

OK, please explain to me WHICH option you don't have.

If you mean the option to turn Conversation View on and off, it has been out for YEARS already.

If you really do not have that capability when you log in to your account, then one wonders what web browser you are using?  Maybe yours is so ancient that it is not supported by Gmail, and that's why you don't have that option?

You did actually look for the option, I hope?

Regards,
Andy
