When I first signed on to Gmail a couple of months ago, my Gmail icon
in my Favorites drop down tab was the trademark Gmail envelope with a
red "M" inside he envelope. A few weeks ago the icon changed to the
generic Internet Explorer blue lower case "e." Anyone know how I get
my icon back?

Try removing the old favorite and creating a new one. Internet Explorer probably just got tired of keeping the icon around. :)

Thx for the suggestion Ryan, I tried that and it didn't seem to work.
I also searched the icons that Windows has stored and couldn't find it
there either.

I have had the same problem for years with other websites as well. The trademark icon stays for a while and then disappears never to return. If anyone knows of a permanent fix I'd love to know

Same thing happened to mine....I also had that Gmail envelope in my
favorites and as a shortcut on my taskbar AND on my desktop. I also
have that generic Internet explorer with the lower case, blue "e." I
WAS able to get the envelope back on my toolbar, though. Just need to
install the Google toolbar. Once it's installed, just go to
"Settings," then click "Options," and click on the "Buttons" tab.
You will see a bunch of different icons/shortcuts including the Gmail
envelope. Click "Add to toolbar." This puts the envelope shortcut on
your toolbar, butI haven't been able to get it back on my desktop or
in my favorites.
