Has anyone discovered a good way to add notes to a received Gmail message?

For example: I use a particular star to tell me that a message needs a followup, but sometimes when I go back to the message, it's not immediately apparent, even to me, what the followup needs to be.

I'm using a workaround of forwarding the message to myself with the needed action in the Subject or preceding the quoted message, but it would be nice if there were something less cumbersome.

Thanks in advance for any ideas--

Only slightly less cumbersome, perhaps ... but you can use Labels for this.

Labels do have a limited text length, but you can do a lot in ~20
characters that say more than a star.

There are a few different methods you can use to help add notes, which is the most suitable will depend on your needs. The following are only a selection of what's available; I'm sure there are quite a few others...

Also  - Go to suggest a feature:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=suggestions.cs
Check the box under "helpful additions" - "Add notes to messages."
& hopefully the Gmail team will implement something eventually.

Google "Add notes to gmail messages" and you will probably find quite a few more possibilities.

You can alrready create tasks form emails in gmail, and there's increased task/email integration/functionality with:
Remember The Milk for Gmail Browser Add-on (for Firefox or Chrome)
"
This browser add-on or extension allows you to manage your tasks in Gmail, add new tasks (and connect them with your emails, contacts, and Google Calendar events), automatically add tasks for starred messages or specific labels, and much more!"

and

Remember The Milk Gadget for Gmail Labs (for any browser)

"This gadget can be added to any Gmail account, giving convenient access to your tasks alongside your email. Review your upcoming tasks for the week (including any overdue), add new tasks and edit existing ones, easily complete and postpone tasks, and customise the display."

A good way for that is if someone creates a google lab. I have no Idea how to, I think that google must create them and not the users.
