Hi Gmail World,

I was wondering if you know of the best way to "add a contact" and be notified when you are in an email that that contact is not in your address book (or is)

I use Gist and Rapportive, which work quite well in looking up details across social networks for the sender of the email, however it doesn't tell me the simplest thing - are they in my address book.

I would love an add-on that looked up the contact and displayed their info, close matches and gave me the option to add them if they are not in my address book.

Thoughts?

When you have a message open, click on the little downward-pointing arrowhead beside the 'Reply' link at the top right-hand corner of the message pane.
In the drop-down menu, you'll either see "Add xxx to Contacts list" (if that contact isn't already included) or that option won't show (in which case the contact is already included in your Contacts listing!).

I actually saw a Google Lab for that problem. Although, it is for a problem like: You type in the wrong name "Bob Billy" and it says: "do you mean "Rob Billy"? I don't know if that would solve your problem, so I might want to leave it to the smart guys on here.

Hi John,

That is what I would expect yes, at the least.
However this simply didn't appear in that menu?? Any ideas how to get it to show up?

Craig,
The option  "Add username to Contacts List" only appears in the (reply box's, dropdown) menu if the contact is not already in your addressbook.
You should get the option if you do have not have that person in your Contact List.
By default, Gmail adds contacts that you reply to to your Contacts List.

Thanks Sarah and JohnW
I missed the need to look in the "reply" drop down... I have been looking in the "contact" drop down that appears by hovering of the contact.
