I've been using Mail Fetcher for several weeks now. Recently I
discovered that some critical emails to my POP account (which I am
fetching) were not being received...and in fact were disappearing from
the server. I didn't check the "Leave a copy of retrieved message on
the server" because I didn't think I'd need to....wrong! Now that I
have discovered this "bug" I have since checked the box....and by
using another email program (Outlook), also opting to leave the
messages on the server....I can see that there are messages there
which Gmail is not retrieving. For example, I use Outlook (or the
program POP Peeper) to check how many messages are on the server, say
27...I use the Fetcher option (under Accounts) "Check mail now" (which
sometimes seems to take forever)....finally, it says it has downloaded
27 messages....but all do no appear in any of my folders (including
spam, trash, all, send to)...I search for some of the missing ones
(there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the missing ones: spam, not
spam, attachments, no attachments, small, large, text, html) and they
are definitely not being retrieved. In the worst case, before
selecting the "Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server"...I
believe the unretrieved messages were being deleted from the
server...as they normally should have been after actually being
retrieved.
Has anyone else noticed this?
In addition, sometimes Fetcher doesn't fetch for 10 hours or
more...even though I am receiving emails (junk or otherwise) hourly. I
wish there were an option to set how often it should check your POP
accounts. And, as mentioned above, sometimes when you manually ask it
to "check mail now"...it keeps showing "Checking mail..." and
refreshing the browser over and over and over again....
Your comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Todd
When I used another provider that would POP from other accounts, they
would also seem to only fetch about once or twice a day. This seems
to be the trend, and therefore I'd trust forwarding more than
fetching, since forwarding should be instantaneous, while fetching
obviously is less frequent.
As far as the disappearing messages, it sounds like the "from" account
believes they are being retrieved by GMail, hence the indication that
they were deleted, or otherwise "archived" on that server. It also
sounds like GMail things it's getting them all, since you said it
indicates "downloaded 27". Either you're encountering a bug (you
should report it) or aren't using an effective search. I'd identify
one of these "missing" messages and include the "in:anywhere" in a
search. This will check all mail, spam, and trash, so no matter where
it wound up, you should find it. I'd also review your filters, since
I'm pretty sure you filters still hit on it, and if one of them
archives, or deletes automatically, it's possible it's hitting, even
if it shouldn't.
Just my thoughts.
Thanks for your thoughts...
It would be nice if they were to give us an option for each POP
account to check at specified intervals (every 5,10, 20 minutes,
etc.)...once or twice a day is not frequent enough.
I used to forward all of my messages from my POP account to my Gmail
account....but then they appear as if they are coming from me...and
not the original sender...so fetching is the preferred option.
I tried carefully searching for the messages in all folders...just not
there. It's weird, but they are sometimes finally "arriving" in my
inbox a day or two later. So, maybe they're not being
deleted...they're just on vacation or something!! Also, checked my
filters, but nothing there that would be making them go somewhere,
marked as read, etc.
Oh well, will just hope the emails eventually arrive, and that we get
that "check every so often" option in the near future.
Best, Todd
We are using mail fetcher to check our personal accounts which are
copied emails from a general support mailbox -- basically when an
email comes into our support mailbox -- a copy of that mail is sent to
3 other mailboxes. mailboxes 1 and 2 are checked via gmail -- the
other is never checked (except to monitor this situation) 95% of the
mail comes in no problem, but occasionally, one is not showing up in
the gmail of mailbox 1 or 2 -- they are not on the server of 1 or 2,
because gmail has deleted it, but they cannot be found in exhaustive
searches of the gmail and we know they made it to the mailboxes of 1
and 2 because they are making it into mailbox 3 and we can check it
prior to starting gmail.
As you state there is apparently no pattern of missing emails (time/
dates/attachments/size/sender/etc.) but this is a major problem and a
deal breaker for us, if we cannot get it resolved.

It seems to be happening less these days that I'm not receiving the
messages...or that they are taking 1-2 days to get to my inbox. At the
time I first reported this I would occasionally get emails that had
been sent a month or more before! (though mostly just spam). Also, I
haven't recently noticed any long periods (several hours or more)
where mail fetcher is not checking my pop account.
I'm still hoping for an option where we can specify how often we want
mail fetcher to check each account.
By the way, I did report this to Google, so I'm sure they are aware of
it. Hope it gets resolved soon.
