I started using the "Check mail using POP3" feature some time ago. That's
the one where Gmail fetches your email from another account and deposits it
in your Gmail account.

It's supposed to check for new email on a regular basis, more frequently
when it finds more emails to fetch.

Mine stopped working on Tuesday, March 16th. "Last checked 4 days ago."

I have no idea why. It simply stopped fetching. Looking at the History, it
shows that it was working regularly until 9:31pm. Then no further attempts,
not even an error message. It just stopped working.

I told it to Check mail now, and it did, and continues to do so.

So why did it stop?

Has anyone else seen this?

If you use the mail fetcher, did yours stop working a few days ago?

Andy

I'm using it, and the oldest fetch it shows right now is 58 minutes; so it seems to be working properly.  I have had it stop in the past, but it always gave a clear indication why (password failed, DNS failed, something).

Hi,

Is it possible that we can somehow have Gmail check POP3 mail at small intervals - say 5min, 10min. Sometimes we may be on call when the person at the other end says "I have just sent you a mail now" but it doesnt come through. Only after Gmail takes its own time to fetch it.

I know about the labs were you can have a refresh button on your page but thats not exactly helpfull

Can anyone help?? - I would not want desktop specific solutions like scripts were you have to have gmail running but more like a automatic "Setting" within gmail

Thanks

The most frequently GMail will check POP3 accounts is every 15 minutes. In the case where you are expecting to receive an email from someone, you can always manually tell GMail to check your POP3 accounts.

Yes. I faced same problems more than 10 times. I'm a professional and
engaged in international business. So, mail is very crucial for me. I
need to use my mail at my office, home and on the go, at any time. I
also need to have synchronization. So that all mail box are same. Due
to huge user, my company's server are not able to handle
synchronization. Gmail, my lovely gadget, came up with 'other pop3
account' using option.
Unfortunately, I found this specific problem happened many times.
I'd suggest, there should be a specific duration of fetching mail,
that can be 5 or 10 minutes. If there is any problem of fetching
during the scheduled time, a auto generated mail should send to inbox
with proper reason.

You can use the 'Refresh' link (I think it should be enabled from Labs settings) and then it would check all the POP accounts configured.

Some security programs that monitor email can interfere with delivery
to your client.

Why isn't' the refresh option helpful?

The refresh option means that you have to first login, and then manually press it whenever you need to check email

greasemonkey solution is again a desktop centric based solution.

These two above doesnt work when you have say 10 or above more email Id's fetching emails .......

ne help ?

So you're using a phone or desktop client to check the mail? If it's
that critical that you be able to update manually, then why not
configure the phone to pull directly from the POP accounts? You could
have it still "leave on server" so that Gmail can still get the mail
as well if needed.

I am not using a phone for any of this. What i want is gmail to automatically fetch mail say in 5min - at all times. without me having to go, login and push the fetch or refresh button.

any way out?

What does matter if Gmail checks for mail when you're not logged in then?

Once again... the most frequent that GMail will check an external POP3 account is 15 minutes.  If GMail is checking your account every hour, then you aren't getting many emails and it isn't worth Google's server's time to check more often.  If you want your other email to instantaneously show up in your GMail account, then POP3 just isn't what you want to use.  Period.  Whether you were using a desktop client or not.  What you want to do is see if your other email service offers automatic forwarding.  If it does, then that will give you the near-instant result you are looking for.  If it doesn't, you will have to live with how often GMail checks itself, or resort to telling GMail to check manually.

Not that it matters, but that's not quite true; I've seen it go as often as
once every 3 minutes, when it's finding emails to fetch.

When it's checking the other account (whether on its own or after I've
pressed Check it now), it seems to take a lot of time to connect and
download. That might be why Gmail doesn't always check it every 30 seconds.
If it takes 30 seconds or more to connect to the other system, exchange
handshakes and check for new messages, it would be continuously doing this,
which might become a big resource hog.

Whoever manages the system you're fetching emails from, might consider it
very un-friendly to attempt to login repeatedly that often. It might bring
their system down if enough people did it. (OK, I'm only guessing here.)

I agree that POP3 isn't what you should be using if you need immediate email
delivery. Auto-forwarding is almost instantaneous. POP3 is not.

Regards,
Andy
