I found it under the More menu.  But I normally read 90% of messages in some form of search, so there's an archive button.  The "label view" replaced Archive (which means "remove inbox label") with "Remove label"... so it's the same thing basically.

(I tried to post a similar message half an hour ago but it doesn't seem to have posted, so apologies if this is a duplicate message).

I have a load of items labelled 'X'. Some of them also still carry the label Inbox.  I want to be able to remove the label 'Inbox' from those items, so that they just carry the label 'X'.

If I choose to view just X-labelled items (which includes those also labelled Inbox), the Archive button is no longer available, and the label 'Inbox' is not available to untick under the 'Labels' dropdown.

The option to use the Archive button is not practicable, because the few hundred items items also carrying the 'X' label are scattered among thousands of other inbox items spanning many years, and there are no search criteria common to the X-labelled items.

But the option to "Archive" messages is available from the "More" button.

(It annoys me too that Google decided to remove the "Archive" button under certain circumstances, when I want to use it.  At least one can find another way to archive messages, even if it is more tedious.)

The option to use the Archive button is not practicable, because the few hundred items items also carrying the 'X' label are scattered among thousands of other inbox items spanning many years, and there are no search criteria common to the X-labelled items.

You can narrow your search.  When you click on a label to view just the X-labeled items, the search box at the top says "label:X".  Type in the box to add "in:inbox", so that you are now searching for "label:X in:inbox".  I have found that doing this also re-enables the Archive button when you select any of the messages.

Just to clarify, when you're in a label-specific view, the option to Archive is only available from the More button when you have selected at least one message which is in the Inbox.
