New Compose - another gripe

I guess I was late in getting the "new compose" window everyone's been complaining about. Today I noticed that I can no longer compose an email in full screen mode. The choices are the little 1/4 or 1/5 screen at lower right, or (after choosing to maximize the compose screen) there's a centered compose window which is about 1/2 to 2/3 of the size of the former compose window. What was wrong with allowing us to use the larger compose window??

Another new "feature" which is very annoying is that I can no longer resize images which I insert into an email, as I was able to do just yesterday. I guess we get just one size of inserted image, and that's all. Which genius decided that this is any sort of improvement?

Sorry to be grumpy. I know we're all stuck with this, and the only option is to leave Gmail. I just hate to see an excellent email client deteriorate for no good reason - or for no reason at all.

Bill,

Hold shift while clicking the pop so called "Full Screen" arrows to pop it out, and maximize it. Not the greatest solution as it involves more clicks and/or keyboard combos then I like (depends on how you navigate), but it gives you a true full screen compose back, at the very least.

Cheers

Hi Bill

Press 'd' and you'll get a compose window in a tab of it's own.

I don't recall ever having an option to resize images.

Michael - Thanks - that works perfectly! It is a little different, but it's easy. It also allows me to insert a scalable image once again.

Marko - Thanks for your reply. On my computers, the window I get when I press "d" is the same centered, partial window I was complaining about. Michael's tip on pressing Shift while opening that window (the one you get when pressing "d" while clicking the double headed arrow of that partial window) brings up a new screen which is the full size of the computer screen.

This morning, they've apparently restored the ability to scale inserted images, even in the "d" window. It was always possible to do this in the past, but yesterday it was impossible. Now, it's a little more difficult, but it can be done in the smaller centralized compose window as well as the full-screen one.

In case you're interested, here's how to scale images:

The image used to open up in the compose window at about half the size of the compose window. Now it opens at the full size of the compose window, but scaling it down works the same as it did in the past.  Clicking on the lower right corner of the image brings up boundary markings (small squares on corners and in the centers of the sides, top, and bottom of the image). After the boundary markings show, clicking on the lower right corner allows me to scale the image down and/or to change its aspect ratio, by pushing the boundary marker up and to the right (to decrease size of the image). With this "new" setup, I have to be careful to avoid a new sliding "elevator bar" at the right of the image - but with a little care, it works just fine.

The older way of opening the image at half the size of the compose window worked a little more easily - but this new way works fine. I'm happy again.

Just in case people missed it before, here's the help page on sizing options

You see anything that allow the REPLY default to be pop-out full screen?

Randy - Michael pointed out the important part of this a day or so ago. In Reply, tap the little down arrow which is just above the text box of the Reply window. Then choose "pop out reply" from the list which comes up. You'll get the small Reply window in the lower right of your monitor screen. To get the full sized window, hold down Shift while tapping the double headed arrow at upper right of the pop out reply window.  You'll get a very large window. To make that window fill the whole screen, click the "maximize" bar at upper right of the new, large window.

It takes a few clicks, but it's quick and simple. Hope I've made sense here.

Not that I can see Randy, my guess is they'll add that option in time as they did with the compose window.

Thanks, but I know it takes a few clicks. I've been doing them. That's why I was hoping there might be a quick way to DEFAULT it, as with the compose window.

I'm really hating having to click on the "..." EVERY time too. *sigh*

This is why the reply starts below the message that you're responding to, ie. so that you can see the conversation.

If you want to expand the ellipsis, try the Ctrl-Shift-A trick (select: none).

How do you come up with these wonderful short cuts?  Are they listed somewhere?

Yes indeed Diane, I posted the link earlier in this conversation: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/3231471

I just found this conversation a few minutes ago.  Did not see your earlier post in it.  Quickly responded to what caught my eye in the brief moment I had.  Thank you for providing the link again.

Also, I'd forgotten about Gmail's keyboard short-cuts ("?").

It doesn't work this way in mine. If I drag an image in, I get no boundary markers that I can drag. If I click on the image I am presented with links below it for Small, Medium, Large, Original size and Remove.
