Does anyone know how to filter contacts to find contacts that don't
have groups. I'd like for all my contacts to have groups associated
but I don't want to touch every contact considering half have groups.
Any ideas?

I'd like to know as well, in Outlook you can view which contacts have
"no catagories" (aka groups) They need the same thing now that I'm
switching to gmail full time.

Good question, I'd love to see that as well!

In Contacts, click Export and save your contacts to as "Google CSV"
formatted file on your computer.

Open that file, which by default is named contacts.csv, in a
spreadsheet. There is a column called Group Membership that contans
the groups associated with each contact.

It's easy to filter those in a spreadsheet to find contacts without
groups.

In another group, someone mentioned you can click on All Contacts and
then type a single space into the contacts search box. Now, all of
your contacts will now be split into two groups: My Contacts and Other
Contacts (those not assigned to any group).

My problem is that through some sync problems, I end up with
duplicates. Most of these duplicates are part of the My Contacts
group, so the above method does not work. I needed a way to get rid
of the contacts that are ONLY assigned to My Contacts (i.e. the ones
NOT assigned to one of my defined groups).

Here is a the only way I could think of doing it:
1) Click on the My Contacts group
2) Select "All"
3) Click on the Groups button, and select Remove From... My Contacts
4) Create a new group for identifying contacts assigned to a group
(e.g. "Assigned" or "Grouped")
5) One at a time; Click on each of your defined groups, select "All",
click on the Groups button, and select Add to... your newly defined
group (e.g. "Assigned")
6) Once you have performed steps 4 and 5 for each defined group, click
on All Contacts and then type a single space into the contacts search
box. Now, all of your contacts will now be split into two groups: My
Contacts (those you just assigned to the "Assigned" group) and Other
Contacts (those not assigned to any group).
7) You can then add all of the Other Contacts to a group named
something like "Unassigned" and deal with them at your leisure. (e.g.
add them to an existing group, add them to a new group, or just delete
them.)

From here on out, you should be able to use the first method mentioned
to find those not assigned to any group.
If you do an export and see that there are some only assigned to My
Contacts, you'll have to use a modified set of the steps above:

a) Perform steps 1-3
b) Next, select your "Assigned" group, select "All", click on the
Groups button, and select Add to... My Contacts
c) Perform steps 6-7

My challenge to you...find a way to automate this process using some
type of script.
