Can anyone tell me how to add contacts directly to BCC? I'm new to
gmail. It took a bit of searching to learn how to add Contacts to a new
message. However, recipients names seem to get added only in the send
TO: box.
I prefer to send messages as Blind Carbon Copies so that not everyone
sees all those addresses. There seems to be no way to do this except to
cut/paste from the TO: box into the BCC box. Is there a way to select
BCC as the primary choice?

Next ?: The friend who invited me to join gmail wants to know if it's
possible to use Smileys with gmail. I told her that I suspect not. My
reason, they may be malware.
Am I wrong? Is there a way to add SmileyCentral or some other such
program to gmail?

Thanks for any help offered.

This has come up before, but since you are new to Gmail, you would not know about it.  Gmail does not provide what you find in other e-mail systems: putting a check by contacts to go into the BCC field.  You have to do it in one of two ways: After you have all your contacts in the TO field, highlight them and copy and paste them into the BCC field.  That's risky; I have lost names via that method.  The better way is to start typing an individual or group name into the BCC field.  After you type a few letters of the name, a popup menu in blue will give you either the contact or a choice of several contacts.  Just click on it on the choice you want and it will be placed in the proper form in the BCC field.
As for Smilies, they have at times presented problems as the result of the providers' insistence on inserting a home page of theirs into your computer and popping ads into your e-mails, blogs, etc.  Anti-virus programs have at times identified them as an "infection."  The emoticons from Smiley Central are marvelously inventive and fun, but they were causing problems in my default MSN Mail, and so I had to disable Smiley Central.  Whenever I see an emoticon somewhere, I copy and paste it into My Pictures, and then in turn drag it into an emoticon folder where I collect emoticons.
I have asked Google to provide its own emoticons, as Microsoft/MSN has done - an icon for them is on the toolbar and all you have to do is click on it and make your choice of one of them with a click of the mouse and bingo, they appear in your email.  I am certain that the people who are members of this Gmail Users Group do not want emoticons appearing here because this is all about bettering Gmail use and any related systems, and having individuals with their own ideas of what is cute or clever popping emoticons into our exchanges of information and advice would be a pain in the neck.  But I wish everybody who would like to be able to use emoticons in their individual Gmail system, and would like to be able to copy and paste images right into the message field instead of being confined only to attachments, would ask Google to make that possible.

If you start typing in the BCC box, you'll see that Gmail begins suggesting people who match what you have typed so far. Once you see the one you want appear, move to it via the keyboard and press enter or click it with the mouse.

The short answer is no, it's not. There are ways to add images, but it's a little involved. There is a Firefox extension which allows you to do this fairly easily.

Thanks for your response and help. You confirmed what I thought re:
Smileys. I did not know about the autofill in BCC so that's a big help.
Much appreciated.
