First off - I love GMail. Enough has been said about it, so I'll get to
the point.
My biggest problem with GMail is when trying to recieve mail in hebrew
from people who use non-Unicode software. One example of non-Unicode
software is MSN-Hotmail.
I understant that Unicode is the future and I'm glad GMail uses it, but
the guys at Google have to put some work into better
backwards-compatibility. The thing is that an e-mail arriving in
non-Unicode to GMail gets converted to Unicode, but the program
converting it doesn't do a very good job (it doesn't seem to even try)
detecting which language it is converting. It always converts to
Western-European. There is no way displaying the data correctly. Even
if I change the encoding, this is probably because it has been
converted.
I have found that the only way to read such a message is to forward it
to my Hotmail account. I was surprised this works and can't really
explain it. It's really annoying though, and I hope they fix it soon.
I guess that's what they mean when they say GMail is still in
Beta-testing. Doesn't make me love it less.
