That doesn't happen when I do it!

"Delete" always works that way; it deletes the whole conversation.

Gmail already has a "Discard" button. Clicking on that drops only the
draft but retains the rest of the conversation.

It is annoying that Discarding a draft deletes it permanently, without
leaving a copy of it in the Trash, which would have been my
preference.

WOW... I've needed Google twice today trying to use Gmail... for the most straightforward stuff like Change Subject and Delete Draft.... in addition to the annoyning stuff i was able to figure out, and also ignoring the brutally awful layouts that are confusing. You'd almost think Steve Jobs designed Gmail - incorporating lots of hidden functionality you need to know before you use it. Just WOW. I really really appreciate Outlook suddenly.

This is a great question. It took me about 20 minutes to figure out how to deal with this. When you click "reply to a message," Gmail does automatically create a draft. If you then realize you don't want to send back the entire conversation - for example, if you're adding another recipient who doesn't need to know the prior conversation - the draft is automatically saved. It then shows up as a red "warning" because it's unfinished business, which is really, really annoying.
