Today I had to change my password for the 3rd time.

the only way to log in was to request a new SMS code and change the password AGAIN.

What is going on?

What has changed?

Is someone else causing this?

WHY!?

I hope I still can log in tomorrow to be able to receive an answer here..

I would recommend clicking on the link that says "Details" in the lower right hand side of the Gmail screen.  This will list all of your logins that have happened.  You should be able to tell from there if somebody else is logging into your account and changing the password.

I'm the only one who logged in to my account.

However i can't see if someone else has been trying to log in?
It only shows successful logins... So thats the same as not showing anything at all!

When reading other posts can it have something to do with 2-step verification?

However
I have not changed anything to my account, one day it worked and the other it just forgot my password. And that now happens again and again...

It almost feels like google lost data... And looses it over and over again...

It is just a waste of time and it to me it feels like Google is loosing grip on its own stuff.
Like a Dinosaur that stumbles over its own feet.

Now it can be hardware failure, or a monday morning admin issue. I don't know... I only know that it sux...

I think the recommendation to see if anyone else has logged in, is to see if someone else might be changing your password on you.  A suddenly changed password is one sign of that.

If someone else repeatedly attempts to login and fails, I believe it will lock you out completely.  I think the fact that you are able to reset your password and then login, without having to wait another day or so, shows that this is not what happened.  (But I could be wrong.)

Perhaps, instead of them forgetting your password, your computer (note I didn't say *you*, necessarily) is sending the wrong password.  There are some reasons why that would happen -- having CapsLock stuck ON being one of them -- perhaps others too.

When Gmail changed its login screen about a month ago, with separate username and password "screens", I have more trouble logging in now, because I start typing the password too early and the first few characters are lost.  I was used to typing it all in fast, using the Tab key, and I miss that.  Old habits are hard to break.

It is peculiar that this is not a widespread problem.  Yours is the only complaint about it that I've seen.  That would tend to indicate that the problem might be unique to your computer, or (shall I say it) to the person in front of the computer, not something endemic to Google.

At work, there is a computer I occasionally use, where I have one heck of a hard time logging in.  The computer seems to skip keystrokes occasionally, and this seems to happen when logging in.  But I can see it when I type my email address too.  Stupid computer.

It could be the keyboard.  I have seen keyboards go out where some keys don't work so well anymore.  Or if it is a wireless keyboard I have seen where either the signal is not good or the battery is dying it misses keystrokes.

Thats it. I am locked out completely...
I have to reset te password and do the SMS  code request to gain acces to my account again

Now also I cant access Adsense right now.
When i reboot my pc then i'm sure I have to do the same shit again to get back into my Gmail

So far nobody has been able to log into my account.

How do I ask Big G to look into this?
If anyone is doing this on purpose then I want to know as much as possible about it.

If not then I will stop using Google for Email.

It's not Capslocl, and it is not that i forgot the password
When i request a new password, Google asks me to enter the last one i used to get in

The new login only is fine with me... If it works it works...  But this password resetting carp is just stupid.
I'm logging in from the same IP, Same PC, Same OS, Same Browser...

and Same Password.

Again WRONG Andy.   :-) Sorry

On another account, an old one that i nolonger use I can still login without issues. With the new login system etc. And other people can also login to their accounts from this PC.

It's just that THIS account gets locked time and time again.

Not the keyboard, its on Google's end.

Other accounts can still be accessed from this PC.
Also non-google accounts with far more complicated passwords

OK.  I was thinking that one would be locked out and unable to login by any means, until the timeout expired.

But perhaps the SMS code overrides that.  I don't know.  I never used it.

Now also I cant access Adsense right now.

Why try to access Adsense?  Do you have your own webpage with ads on it?

Is it tied in with the same account that you can't access?  (Does this change the picture with respect to having Google support - anyone know?)

So far nobody has been able to log into my account.

Are you saying you have been unable to login even right after using the SMS code?

I'm curious why you wrote "nobody".  Are there others who would have access to your account?

If anyone is doing this on purpose then I want to know as much as possible about it.

Well, if the problem is just that some malicious user (or computer) out there is repeatedly trying unsuccessfully to login to your account, then there isn't very much anyone can do about it.  I mean, I guess you could hire a computer security expert & thug to track down that user and poison them so they can't do it anymore...  but I would not advocate that.

If that is the problem, then it would likely happen no matter who is the email provider.  Most if not all have basic security measures that try to stop account hacking by trying millions of passwords -- by locking out the account.  But there is nothing I know of, to stop someone from trying.

Someone else chime in here if there is something -- perhaps the 2-step verification method? -- that is secure enough so that they don't need to lock out an account even if it is hit by millions of login attempts.

Not the keyboard, its on Google's end.

The lockout might be on Google's end, but as I say it could be the result of someone, somewhere, trying to break into your account.

Considering the available evidence, that is starting to sound like the most likely reason.

Good luck with that.  If someone wants to make you a target, the options are few.

I hope i'm not a target. but Google does not provide me info on that...

Which is kinda crappy, if they protect the attacker..
I'm not sure what to think of it, so if there is an attacker, then the attacker has the advantage.

Still, it can be a Google issue.. I just don't know.

But I was pretty pissed about it.  Now, well, it tells more about Google then about me hehe.
I hope this will be fixed soon. I wish Google had at least some kind of direct support line. For stuff like this. Just to be able to get some information at all.
Now I still know nothing. Thanks for talking with me but nothing is improving, ant it is still wasting my time. And also your time..

I think google should not just list 'successful logins' but also 'unsuccessful login attempts' At least then I know what is going on in case of an attack (if any?)

Google  does like to make me work and sell their ads for a below average revenue, and then you need support for something and there is nobody home...
That's no way of doing business...

But hey, this is how you get to know who you are dealing with. Now I say this, and that might cause a delay to a solution, but people be warned. This just sucks.

Oh and, nobody else has access to MY account.

I have another account that still wokrs fine
And other people can access THEIR accounts from THIS PC without issues.

So it is not a hardware error, or caps, it clearly is something on the other side of the line and only with 1 account.

Maybe the NSA is after me?  :-)  Who knows...

But even IF it was a malicious PC or user, If it is an attempt that does not originate from my home location then it is not ME. (unless i'm on vacation, but I doubt I would use email when I'm a few days away from it all...)
It just doesn't make sense. I'm don't think I am a target. But again, there is no way to verify that.

So I hope that when logout I don't have to change my password once again.  I now will stay logged in because I don't have time to jump trough hoops 3 times a day

I hope everyone with login issues can find this post!

Thanks for your time!

Gmail is a free service.  Sorry, but you cannot expect direct line support for a free product, especially one that has literally hundreds of millions of users.

Google has versions which are not free, where you do get product support.  But not for the free version that most of us use.  Imagine millions of people trying to call up Google to demand tech support, when for 99% of them, the problem is on their own computer or the way they are using it.  Google may be benevolent in some people's minds, but not so benevolent as to give away unlimited free support for people's computers or even their own FREE products.

I think google should not just list 'successful logins' but also 'unsuccessful login attempts' At least then I know what is going on in case of an attack (if any?)

I agree, and I think you should make that as a suggestion to Google.

(Now, if only I could remember what URL to go to, to make suggestions for Gmail improvements.  You can probably find it if you hunt around in Help, or a web search.)

It just doesn't make sense. I'm don't think I am a target. But again, there is no way to verify that.

If you have a webpage, you multiply your visibility a million times.  That could make you a target, "just because."  If the Google account is also for the website, then they might not be trying to get to your email - they might be trying to hack your website.

But it is also the login of my Adsense...  And that makes more money for Google without doing any work then me doing all the work to place the ads...

And the ads that are in my gmail, that does not bring google any money?
If they would not add ads to my Gmail screen THEN it would be a bit more Gratis, But then they still will capitalase on MY DATA.

So please do not confuse me about 'free'.  Google is NOT free at all, and it is also not gratis. They pretty much use all of us and sell our data to whoever wants to pay for it. So from that perspective you may call it theft!  But I still don't think that Larry and Sergei are the bad guys. But with all that money that they squeese out of OUR data they could eventually show more respect to us. It's their choice not to do that so then it is my right to say as much about it as I want.

Freedom of speech. Gratis education.

It still does not answer the question, so I will keep reminding. :-)

And sure they also offer a solution to pay on top of it all it you really want, why not... I didn't know that still existed.

I sure like to suggest my idea to google, but.. there is no-way to reach them...  Not even for important questions.
But a real improvement would be to offer people an option to contact google with questions in the first place.

Ok then I might be a target after all, but then there are MUCH bigger targets then me out there, and why don't they have this issue?

Soo again, THIS is exactly why i would like to get in touch with someone of Google itself.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So Larry, or Sergei...

Guys,
if you read this please get in touch, you have all my data so you already know all the ways you can get in touch with me.
Email, chat, phone snailmail. I have a few good questions for the both of you.

You make a lot of sweeping statements about Google and our data, do you have the facts to back this up? Nobody said it's not your right but it's also our right to not have to listen to your rants. If you practise proper Netiquette and stop swearing on a public forum then perhaps somebody may lift a finger to help.

Yes, you get targeted ads in Gmail (I seem to only ever get 2 in my Promotions tab) but you do also get quite a lot in return. Surely you cannot also expect direct support for hundreds of millions of users?

It still does not answer the question, so I will keep reminding. :-)

You demand response yet you did not answer my questions. Have you a) cleared cache and cookies and b) tried another browser? Do you have any browser extensions that may be interacting with your Google account? Any other devices?
You also don't mention what platform you are using. If you have Windows, it is possible that you have a malware infection.

I have users with the same name as me often trying to reset my password and never once been locked out of my own account.

You don't seem to be locked out either as you are able to reset the password and get back in.

And sure they also offer a solution to pay on top of it all it you really want, why not... I didn't know that still existed.

So, have you used the 'Send Feedback' option in the Help? Have you been to the Product Forum?

And again you twist things around by saying that I make sweeping statements?   I merely tell how I experience thingstrying to explain what is actually wrong. That you act as ....well, a fanboy (? sorry I can't find an other english word for it)  trying to ignore that, that is not my problem is it?

I did not twist anything. You made statements, I asked if you had facts. You seem to be of the attitude that your opinion is fact. That you act as a Troll is not my problem is it?

But i'm not here to fight you, you also have your freedom of speech. But allo of this is NOT solving  the issue of being LOCKED OUT every time.

YOUR issue.

And I'm not sure where you are from Andy  Are you in the USA?
There is also a cultural difference it seems, here where I am in Europe people speak their mind.
In places as the US and the UK people try much harder to be polite and police themselves, and never solve anything because of it. (half baked political solutions at best)  Now i must say on a political level Europe is just as bad...

I don't know what you are on about here but FYI I am in South Africa.

So if you don't mind I give you the last word, on this. And I go back to the real issue of getting locked out. I think I was clear enough about my point of view.
I don't hate Google, else I would not use it. But I don't like how things are done when it comes to support. And that's constructive feedback where I come from

Wasting time on new passwords costs less time then giving constructive feedback to deaf ears..

Perhaps that's because your feedback was not constructive at all.

Larry, Sergei...  Come on guys. I'm sure you can do better then this.

Why don't you do better, then you can take on 'Big G'?

Ik keep using it because it is too much work at this point in time to move again..

I moved to Google because it looked like a good idea at the time. Well it was... Hotmail was a very bad choice...

Hmm ok. then another question Where can i find decent Google support?
For all the issues in the group it really looks like a makeshift Google helpdesk..

Good that there is something but ... o well.

My opinion is based on the facts that I described, However I also didn't notice that several different people where replying.
In the e-mail i just did not expect replies from different people . I usually only have correspondence with one person at a time.
It looked twisted because to me it looked like I still was in the conversation with Andy. My apologies for that.

I was on about cultural differences. I'm Dutch BTW.

I'm not into this business, I'm just a customer who ran into a very irritating issue that I like to see solved and who gives feedback how I experience it. If that's not constructive then what is?

But as I said, I will move my email to another place, but I can't move Adsense, so the issue is still there. Your suggestion to take on Big G does not make sense. Larry and Sergei however have the means to make it better, and it is also in their best interest.. But IF I would be in their business, then yes, I would have people actively looking for issues and fixing them ASAP.  And I would also let people know what issues are being fixed. And when they are expected to be solved.

Well, it is a bit of a makeshift helpdesk, users helping users, since 90% of all problems are user problems, and the 10% of the time it's actually Google's fault, there's enough consensus in the group (me too, me too) to allow us to know and stop looking for a user problem.  Out of 20K users in this group, you're the single one having this problem.  This is less than 0.1% of the users here having the problem.  Also, since you said it's impacting your AdSense, sounds more like a google account issue, not a gmail product issue.

The other reason we get so many help requests is that people tend to miss that when you click your gear icon at the top right of your GMail window, there are two options (in US English, not sure about wording in other languages), "Send Feedback", and "Help".  Send Feedback will send your message directly to a real google person (no guarantee if they'll send a personalized reply, but I have had issues get resolved like that; even without a response), and from "Help" there's a link to the OFFICIAL GMAIL PRODUCT FORUM.  "VISIT HELP FORUM" it says in US English.

Good that there is something but ... o well.

It looked twisted because to me it looked like I still was in the conversation with Andy. My apologies for that.

You posted to a public, international, forum.  You need to be aware of your posting, that will help you anticipate whether you'll get a single person response (an e-mail) or multi-person (a forum).

I was on about cultural differences. I'm Dutch BTW.

I'm not into this business, I'm just a customer who ran into a very irritating issue that I like to see solved and who gives feedback how I experience it. If that's not constructive then what is?

Constructive in this case refers to the way in which you communicated your problem, and responded to those endeavoring to help.  Cursing is never constructive, in any language.

Again, it's affecting multiple products, it's not actually a GMail issue then, it's a Google Account issue.  You seem to be the only sufferer, so isolated issue, very likely to be user problem, and despite several people trying to help you, you seem unwilling to take their constructive suggestions, often resorting to attacks.

Ok thank you,

This was what Goggle gave me as first hit when I searched for Oficial Google Support.  So is Google itself indexes it like this.... o well

I will try the official offical one now.  Thanks for pointing me there!
Cursing is a side effect of something, and cursing has a reason. Official support knows this and takes it into account. At least at the helpdesks where I have worked in the past it was.

I agree it is not the best way, but it happened, it got released into the free world.  I'm sorry.  If Google would have pointed me to the official official support section in the first place then my cures would have landed in a better place.

I'm in a big hurry, cant reply to all the rest right now.

But thanks for your answer.

That is odd, I get support.google.com as first hit using that exact text. This group is not even on the first three results pages. I stopped looking there.

Cursing is a side effect of something, and cursing has a reason. Official support knows this and takes it into account. At least at the helpdesks where I have worked in the past it was.

I too have worked at an ISP helpdesk many years ago and I never enjoyed being sworn at. Later, as a supervisor, I instructed my juniors to simply hang up when being sworn at. It is an immediate indication that the person is not willing to have a rational conversation but rather just wants to vent.
I curse when I'm with my friends but I know it's not appropriate in public. This is a public forum, therefore it is not appropriate here.

... when you search you get abunch of useless hits that do not offer any suport where you can just ask a question to a human being.

so when you go down that list then this group is the first you find.

and ssupport.google.com is pretty much useless when wan to ask why this is happening \
the pre chewed answers on questions that you do not want to ask might help for common questions but not for more specific questions

It's never a your to deal with people that are pissedoff. But people do get pissed off very often just right before they go ask for support and get even more pissed off when the support is hard to find especcially when you ask the biggest seachengine for support that exact same company. etc.

So is it that hard to imagine that you are a sitting duck when that leads to a situation where the search engine leads you to the wrong place?
On purpose or not? Who knows... you might ask a conspiracy specialist about that..

... anyhow..

I don't mind if pissed people curse in public or cyber.  Its merely a result of something.

Freedom of speech and expression.

Freedom of speech and expression.

Freedom of speech is one thing but in my experience, if you want to elicit help from volunteers, it is best to be polite and use proper language. It also helps if you list what troubleshooting steps you have taken on your end.

This is even in the tagline of the group "Remember, this is a user's group, and not official Google support.  As far as we know, no employees even visit this group.  Feel free to ask for help on a problem, but remember these are fellow users so do some troubleshooting of your own."

Zack had a few good directions.

I'm no longer pissed, but Google still has room for improvements.
It is not my fault that google has a lax approch when it comes to support.  For that reason I landed in the wrong forum...
Sorry to be a burden, but i'm certainly not the last who will end up here by 'accident'
And also not the last one who is going to be pissed ...

I agree you can't help it either. but Google can... So lets hope that google reads along and looks for a solution so that other people don't HAVE to drop in by accident, pissed, cursing and ranting.

I have not noticed any tagline, but ok again, it was there somewhere.
And in my email it is not.

So, it this issue was some kind of attack, then the person who did it had a bit of a succes...  But it would have been cooler if that person would have send me an email. Now I still don't know why it happened.  And i could then have looked to solve the problem.
Just like Google could have solved something if they would have been more easy to reach. (May I call that evil?)

It's pretty simple. With hundreds of millions of free Gmail users, there is no way to offer direct support.
For $5/month, you get direct support and no ads. I don't think that's too unreasonable.

And if you do search for 'gmail support' do you then find any real support?
Where you can ask a real question to a real person?

All the links I get send you around in circles.

So you really think that someone who is pissed and looking for support for a long time will even bother to search for and read a whole page of yadda yadda?
Really? Sure the rules where there, I never came across them, I didn't even know there where rules.

And ok they are now a great thing to put me in a corner.
With many BILLIONS of ads in all those hundreds of millions of Gmail accounts there sure will be a budget for support.
And the ads are not the only thing google uses to monetise on its users. So I'm sorry, I don't agree. With all the 'automated self support' they offer there for sure should be room for questions that the support system didn't cover....

With all the money and technology that google has in house you don't have to make an excuse for them to not being able to do this and use money as a reason.   $5/month is just fee to remove ads distractions. So they should be just as happy with the money they now make with the ads in the accounts.

But ok, you made your point. Though I do hope that somehow google looks into this and finds a decent solution.
Even Chinese websites have better support... It's also a mess, but they at least managed to offer real support. Even for non critical questions.

Now don't say that manpower is cheaper there...  :-)  It is, but that's not the point.

Well there's a difference.  I don't search for support.  I click the gear icon and support is right there.  Why would I bother to go searching for help when it's two clicks away?  Also, for your reference, I've used the feedback link a few times, once at least to suggest a new feature (which appeared within 3 weeks); and at least once for a login problem (which disappeared in two days).  None of the times have I ever gotten a response, nor have I asked for one.  I calmly and politely explained my problem, or suggestion, and simply asked that it get fixed... and it did.

So you really think that someone who is pissed and looking for support for a long time will even bother to search for and read a whole page of yadda yadda?
Really? Sure the rules where there, I never came across them, I didn't even know there where rules.

When you first joined the group, the main group page (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/gmail-users) had the tagline you were told about at the top, and the very first post at the top of the list is the rules.  Even if you've used e-mail ever since signing up for the group, the visit to the group page and registration request had to happen first.

And ok they are now a great thing to put me in a corner.

Having run a helpdesk in the US before, I think you're seriously overvaluing the monetization of your data that Google is doing, or undervaluing the helpdesk support.

But ok, you made your point. Though I do hope that somehow google looks into this and finds a decent solution.

Again, you've been told multiple times.  If your intent is to get Google to look into this, you'll have to take your missive elsewhere.  Of the 20K+ accounts in this forum, exactly 0 end in google.com.  You'll get no satisfaction from posting here and expecting Google to notice.

Now don't say that manpower is cheaper there...  :-)  It is, but that's not the point.

I just did a Google Search for "Gmail Support" and the first link was the Gmail Help Page (https://support.google.com/mail/?hl=en#topic=3394144).  That page offers lots of helpful links.  On the right side of that page is a link that says Help Forum (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/gmail) which sends you to the official Gmail support page.  With two clicks you should have been able to find the official Gmail support page.  I'm not sure if Google representatives are active on that page, but I would venture to guess that they do.

I don't agree that Google should give away direct support for their free products.  Find me another company that offers free direct support for a free product they are offering.  You are going to be hard pressed to find something like that.

We have a pretty nice group of friendly users on this list that are always willing to offer assistance.  But, the person with the issue needs to understand that we are just users like they are they need to give as much information about the problem as they can so we can help.  It is all in how the question is presented.

Jeff

thanks Zack,

Ok when you are able to log in and then are still aware of where Google hides the stuff.
But for someone who gets locked out 100% that still would not work.

I used the feedback option in adsense the other day , but without feedback to me it still feels like writing on a wall in a dark alley.
