Why in the world would you change one of the easiest and most
attractive feature of your software that allows you to populate
contacts by simply typing their names. Maybe you guys are making so
much money at Google that you have forgotten that simplicity and ease
of use got you where you are. Why the hell are you messing with this
new version and pissing people off when it comes to sending emails in
a very simple fashion. Until you fix it I will have to move my
contacts over to yahoo as I am sick and tired of clicking over to the
old version to send emails.

A) us people are not at Google, we're fellow users like yourself.
B) Be careful of language, this is a public forum and some of your
language is bad in certain cultures
c) I don't understand from this message what is going wrong so we (as
fellow users) might offer a solution to the problem.

It almost sounds like auto-complete isn't working... but it's working
fine for me. Perhaps you should try clearing your cache and cookies,
and perhaps test with another browser. Often this fixes problems of
this sort.

i have had issues with this new switch to newer version. hoping you
can help. my mail pages take forever to download now. i switch back to
older version right away but its really a pain bc even that takes
forever to load. is there a setting a can change to default to older
version always? what is the upgrade to the newer version?

thanks,

greg

The new version (as I hear it) is a complete re-write of the code,
which Google says should be much faster. I've heard a few people say
it was slower, some faster, most - no comment. Personally I'm a bit
faster I think.

It's been commented on here that when you click Old Version, that
becomes your default and you'll stay with the old version. I can
neither confirm nor deny this. I do know that you should be able to
bookmark the old version so it will come up that way (just like you
and bookmark HTML mode).

For me, clearing cache and cookies doesn't solve the problem, nor does
using another browser or another session of the same browser. When
choosing more than one contact as a "bcc" addressee, the new version
adds a letter to the addressees already in the box and then places the
cursor in a wrong place, usually somewhere farther back in the box.
Then, of course, one can't send the email because of the extra letters
in the addresses. This is the same syndrome described in posts by
"=sgt=" in other conversations and thus is likely a widespread
phenomenon.

I have experienced the same problem, but in the TO: box instead of
Bcc. I found that I only have the problem while using the new version
of Gmail and the Vista version of Internet Explorer. When I use
Firefox or old versions of Internet Explorer the problem doesn't exist
with the new version of Gmail.

A second thing I have discovered is it is sensitive to the way the
addresses are selected by the user. When I type the first few letters
of a name or address and the list of possible contacts drops down, if
i select the desired contact by clicking with the mouse the contact is
added earlier in the list of contacts and stray letters are left at
the end. But, if I used the up and down arrow keys to highlight the
desired contact and press enter to select it, the contact is added
correctly and with no problem. I have found this solution to be the
easiest for me, as clicking Older Version every session is tedious,
but selecting with the arrows is natural to the way I type.

And there's the rub. With this complete dissertation (Thank you
mallory), I was able to replicate the problem. It's caused by two
things I never do... 1) Use IE (perhaps Vista/IE7 specific) and 2) Use
the mouse to complete an auto-complete. I was able to replicate your
condition exactly. Using the arrows I got no problem. If I used the
mouse, the characters were left behind. I CANNOT replicate this in
Firefox. I cleared cache/cookies and it returned (in IE/Vista with
mouse auto-complete). It's time for a bug report guys... be sure to
submit it with clear details like Mallory provided so they can nail it
down and fix it.

Roger the bug report. It's not strictly related to Vista, since I am
experiencing it with IE7 in both versions of Windows XP.

And the new version doesn't work in IE6, so no problems in IE6. I
have already submitted one bug report on it, if others do too, it will
help it get taken care of (though it's never a problem for me, I don't
use IE7 to access my GMail :)

I completely agree. The new Gmail interface is very clunky and
Microsoft-like (sorry, Google..). It takes forever to upload any
attachments (even ones on the order of 100 kBytes) in Safari 3. The
older version is much faster and a lot more user-friendly. I just
wish that there was an option in the settings to permanently disable
the new version, no matter what happens or how you bring up Gmail.

Safari 3 is not yet completely supported. Try Firefox and if the problem persists, then Set the language to "English UK", that will switch the interface to the old Gmail Version.

I have Foxfire and I have to do the below.....

Go into settings and change your language to English UK.  For some reason they are still using the older version.  Now when I sign in I automatically get the older version until they get some of the bug out of the newer version.

The new version was very bad. I liked the new typing features that are
similar to Mozilla. But the function of my email was rendered useless.
It dropped my emails, didn't access the categories I needed, didn't
autofill my addresses so that they were lost forever. Major mess.
Also, nothing would drag. Not even in the same email. Draft category
didn't work. So what good were the new typing features? I had no
email. Tried to write to gmail team, but there's no way. Hopefully,
someone on the staff has been reading these comments.

I tried the advice to go to settings, and change the language setting
from English US to English UK. It worked !! I now have the old version
back. Previously, there was a choice at the top of my gmail page
between older version and newer version, but there was no way to make
the version stay that way after logging out. By changing the language
setting to UK, it is now always the way it used to be, with the old
features back. Wow! That was scary. I thought I was going to have to
leave gmail.

Eventually the new version will come to all languages. Hopefully you
filed bug reports with Google for all the problems you encountered so
they can find/fix them before they "translate" the new version and
eliminate the older version (most likely course of action they'll
take)

Zack,

On my system, I'm sorry to say, you are incorrect; I too must click to
the "old version" each time my browser opens. I wish there were a
function by which I could choose which version I use, but gmail
defaults to the newer version. I have several issues with the new
version, which are not really appropriate for this post, but I am in
agreement with the previous two posters - this version is not user or
eye-friendly with my browser. Perhaps the programmers could take out
some of the "transparency,' (upon which I've commented once before) of
the dropdowns, which would make it much easier to use for me. Although
this perhaps is not the place to mention it, but an "auto-replace"
function for commonly mispelled words (perhaps configurable by the
user) with which some word processors and even internet chat programs
now feature would be a tremendous help! (e.g., accidentally type hte,
and have that converted to the correct "the") Just more food for
thought.

Zack was not incorrect.  If you read his post again, you will see that he says he can neither confirm not deny that click Old versions makes it your default.

I'm not sure what transparency you are talking about because when I click the More actions drop down menu, it's a solid color background, not transparent.

I didn't have the new version then, which is why I didn't know. I now
know that that doesn't work, but can confirm that I and others have
posted 3 different methods one can use to get themselves back on the
old version if they've tried all the normal suggestions to clear up
the problems, still have them, and have reported them.

1) Change your language to another language (new version only works in
English (US)
2) Change your browser to something other than IE7 and FF2 (or
compatibles like Mozilla and Opera) [new version only works on these
browsers]
3) Load GMail from the url which points to the old version; can be
found in your address bar after you select "Old Version"

Just wanted to add in:

I'm using IE7 and Vista. I have had absolutley zero problems with the
new Gmail. Auto complete email adresses and everything else works fine
and amazingly fast. Actually compared to YahooMail (upgraded) which I
just switched from, Gmail runs better with less glitches.
