You can't. Gmail does not have sorting (as in user defined sort order).

Thank you!

It's a bit of a cumbersome kludge but better than no
alphabetical organization.

Any other workarounds for organizing gmail inbox message subjects
alphabetically?...

This question is addressed especially to people who think outside the
box !

I honestly would consider alphabetical organization to be very much IN
THE BOX thinking. I don't know a reason I would ever need my e-mail
(which is more based on topics and ideas than a particular order)
alphabetically sorted.

If you'd like it alphabetical to help you find something, here's the
outside the box thought, "Search". You're using a mail system
developed by a search company. It's widely popular and blazingly
fast. If you need to find a particular message, type what you
remember about it in the search box and work your way to it. I
honestly never have to search more than 2 times to find a message I'm
looking for, usually it's the first search or via a label. I have
searched more than 3 times, but only to find the message didn't really
exist.

You MAY be able to create filters that will label them automatically. I'm not at a pc so I can't test it though.

How would you do that so that message subjects beginning with a are
labelled a automatically, message subjects beginning with b are
labelled b automatically and so forth?...

In the "subject" field (while creating a filter), do "a*" then setup the filter to label it with "a." Repeat for "b*," "c*," etc.

Sorry, I'm rushed, but I'm hoping you'll get that. :)
