Hello Google !

Can you tell how to get rid of these tabs system you implemented recently ? (primary, social, promotions)
Now, instead of one, we have 3 email boxes to check. You are making things more complicated. Who got that idea ?
And it just doesn't work, seriously.
I missed quite a few emails (some emails from real people via linkedin), not just some of these group summaries.
More recently, I booked an insurance, I was surprised not to receive any confirmation email. I was about to write to the insurer to complain about that, before I realized you categorized that email as promotion.
The spam filter works well, but that one really is not good.

Please advise how to disable that option, and simply have all emails under the same tab.

Thanks !

We are not Google, we are Gmail-Users (as the name states) like yourself.  We can't answer your inquisitory questions about Why; except that if you read the Google Blog, they did talk about responding to user requests about such things.

As to the tabs (which I don't use and never have), when I clicked the "gear" icon I have an option to "Configure Inbox" which lets me check/uncheck which of those tabs I want to use, and if I go into Settings > Inbox, I have a similar option.

Simple. Gear icon, Configure inbox. Uncheck the ones you don't want. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=gmail+remove+inbox+categories

It seems, Zack, that so many people are also completely incapable of doing a Google search.

Thanks for lmgtfy.com, I use that daily now :P

I am a little confused, because I have never un-checked any of those tabs, and yet I have just the one Inbox.  At some point I might have chosen to Hide all Categories (on the Settings > Labels page).  But when I go to "Configure Inbox," I see that Primary, Social, and Promotional tabs are still checked.

Does having these Categories enabled/unhidden make some messages go to them instead of the Inbox?  It sounds like Harvey56 is seeing new messages not going to his Inbox.

Perhaps my account has not yet been chosen by Google to have the Category views activated.  I'm happy the longer it stays that way.

Easy.

When I first joined the group, it was listed by Google as being the main discussion group about Gmail, with no indication that they didn't run it too.

User groups don't necessarily mean users only.  Many user groups are managed by their sponsoring companies.

Check to see if your Settings > Inbox > Inbox Type is set to something other than default.  If it's set to something like "Unread first" then, even though you may have those categories selected at Configure Inbox, your selected inbox type will override the display of the categories tab.  At least that's what happened to me when I set mine to "Unread first" just now.  Setting Inbox Type back to "default" enabled the categories tabs again.

Exactly, and the reverse is true.  Despite the categories being rolled out, I "never" got them, because my mailbox is set to Priority First... instead of default.  I'd guess, Andy, that you are similarly set for some other inbox type.

Nope.  My mailbox is still set to the "Default Inbox".

If/when Google decides to migrate my account to some newer-fangled corruption, is there anything I can do to keep the Inbox looking like it is now?  None of this Priority/Unread first/Primary/Social/Promotions/Categories nonsense.  Just a plain ordinary Inbox, in chronological order.  (It is upside-down from what it should be, but I can live with that.)

Are you saying that a common-sense organization like that is a thing of the past?

It is a simple matter of turning it off from the Gear icon->Configure inbox.

I for one find that it definitely un-clutters my inbox. It is also faster to click on the tabs than to click on labels.

I am still working on getting used to it, Maybe I will try turning it off after all. I figured it out pretty quickly when it first came out, and thought it could be useful for uncluttering, but I find it is mainly making me miss emails...

Nobody will help you if you are too lazy to even compose a question properly.
