I signed up for Gmail account 3 days ago and am being spammed at the
rate of 30 per day in the email that I signe into google with. In the
headers of all these emails, (received in Outlook) they all come from
(gmail.com).
I use iGoogle, Analytics, etc. and want to stay in with those. Just
want to get out of Gmail. How do get out of this mail account and
leave everything else as it was?

Ummm You just delete it. The email that you have now may have been
used by some one and then they may have deleted it now you have that
name. The first user with that accout may have had a spam problem and
now you do. So just delete it and make a new one.

Xavier,

Google does not promise to recycle user names, and I've never heard of
them actually doing it, so it's highly unlikely this is the case.

Mark them all as spam, and gmail will soon learn, and place them in the Spam label.  Then you will never see them again in the inbox.

I don't know about you, but my spam filter is great.  Have you been marking spam messages as such?  I haven't had a spam message in my inbox in weeks.

I never get them in my inbox. But i get over 200 emails a day and the
spam goes to the spam box. I just dont like the fact that i have spam
at all.

Same here, zero spam. Haven't had spam in a few years actually. I think the only few times I had spam was in the first 1.5 years that Gmail first entered beta.

I like theire spam filter very much as well. In fact, I haven't had a spam message in my inbox, ever. :)

Well, that isn't really the spam filter's fault :)

Spam is a fact of life in the email world.  As long as you have an email address, you WILL get spam.  As long as it's getting caught by the filter, it's doing it's job.  If it bothers you that much, why don't you use the Greasemonkey script that hides the unread count of your spam?

So what you are saying is, your spam filter works perfectly,so therefore you think it sucks? Or are you blaming the spam filter for the fact that spammers send out spam?

One of my reasons for choosing Gmail, is that it DOES have a spam label.  I can therefore check to ensure that there are no false positives.  And then with great pleasure delete forever all those spams in one go.  Great.

It realy should not bother you, just go to SPAM, select all, and delete. The mails in the spam box dont have any influence on your computer becouse they are neve transfered from the server (you shouldnt open - download any of them and it will be ok).

I am aware of that labs feature, but my understanding of it is that it
hides ALL unread counts whereas the Greasemonkey script is limited to
only the spam unread count.

And here's my tuppence worth.

If you leave the stuff in your Spam folder (after all, it's not doing
you any harm, or taking up any space on your PC) it does allow
Google's Spam-detection algorithms to know what you consider Spam as
against what I might consider as Spam. And Google will throw it away
for you, anyway. Mark it as Read on a daily basis when you check for
false positives, and then ignore it.
OK. I'm sure we all agree that messages for the various pills and
enlargements are rubbish, but some people do want 'stuff' that others
consider rubbish, and Google uses your indications to keep an eye on
what you classify as Spam.

Here is my personal observation about all this talk about the spam... Some say they receive an enormouce amount of spam. others say they dont get any spam. Arent we all using Gmail, the same mail service? How come that this is happening? Ok, perhaps, some of us are signed up to some news letters, info based updates, answer requests..., for what every individual that posts a request online for any kind of the service mentioned above - you must give your mail address in some type or form. I never give my adress to any online questionare, and perhaps thats the reson why i never get any spam at all. Ok, im egsaturating, i have 116 mails in my SPAM box in gmail, from the day i started using it till today. Come on, isnt this an alomost perfect statistic? I check the spam box every now and then, and not one mistake do i find. All the mail in my spam box has the subject "buy viagra" or "enlarge your pee nuts" or "you won the lottery and won 10000000000 xilion euros..."... Shure thats spam, but its never in my inbox and i do not open it. So, every once and a while, i open this spam folder, select all the received mesages - and then chose - delete all. Thats it. I never have any problems whith it, and it never influenced my computer in any way. (not hardware and not my soft ware).
But when im reading all these complaints about the spam that people recive when using gmail, im beggining to think, that it has something to do with:
- the services, news, updates you are signed up for
- the name, last name - our your account name that you use ( explanation: the spam people send their shiat to as much people that is posible, so im shure they worote some sort of program that uses the most common names used in the english language, and the most commonly used last names...., so if you are John Doe, and have an account at google - i mean - joh...@gmail.com, youll probably receive a huge amount of spam every day. On the other side, i live in a smaller country and my name isnt very comon, so that got me thinking - perhaps thats why i never get any spam, when some people complain about this all the time). Solution  - ok, not very apropriate, but still, change your account infor - first name and last name ... Make it exclusive.

Agreed. But i still have to ask you - why do a have to mark the mail in my spam box as read? I dont have much knowledge about the (sirkomstances - my spelling is For Dumies) - problems, that could hapen, if i do open a mail from my spam box. Ok, i uderstand that if its only some stupid ad for viagra or "peenuts" enlargement, writen in plain text, no harm can be done to my computer. But what if its some virus or trojan or ... ? Can i know this before i open the mail? Let me explain... when i receive lets say a Power point presentation, before i open it, gmail halts for a while and it writes - checking for viruses... After a minute or so, it lets me know that the atachment has been checked and that no virus was found. Ok, you have all seen this many times... Can i be shure that the same thing will hapen when i open a mail in my spam received - box? Im thinkig, there is much more probability that ill get a virus, bug, troyan or whatever via spam then from my regular mail...? So i dont mess with it.
Perhaps i have distanced my self from the main issue, we were talking about spam after all, but i wanted to explain why i always leave the mail that is marked as spam in the spam box - end leave it at that. It just seams odd to me, that many people using gmail, say that the amount of spam is unbarable... and just when you start thinking that the gmail spam filter doesnt work... the other half of gmail users say just the oposite. They never or almost never receive any spam, and they say that the filter works better than anything they have tryed till now.

You don't have to. And using "Mark as Read" is not the same as opening it.

I'm one of the "Mark as Read" crowd. I do this so I know how many of
the messages in "Spam" I've reviewed. I do this to check for
false-positives. I haven't had many in a while, but it has been known
to happen, so I keep an eye on it to make sure something isn't
accidentally going there. Marking the messages as read (or deleting
them) resets the count so I know if I have any in there to review.

I also don't delete them right away because I (usually daily) send all
my spam to the US government. They have a division to deal with spam
which comes from US sources. It may be coincidence, but my volume of
spam has steadily decreased since I began doing this.

Also, deleting your spam doesn't decrease the effectiveness of the
filter. The data is submitted to the filter as soon as the message is
marked as spam (whether by the filter or by you), or marks as not
spam. There is no need to hang onto messages for the benefit of the
filter.

Ok, thanks for the input.
I however dont review the spam mail very often, and also i dont delete them more then once every few months It seems im very lucky, becouse compared to the complaints of some people, i have very few and every single message is actualy spam, i never found some Tech Republic or RedHat info, CompTIA mail (or other service that i am assigned to) in my spam box.
