I love the addition of the new tab in the upper left hand corner, but
is there any way to keep it from opening a new browser session when
clicking on it? Specifically, I use Firefox, and I have my Google
start page set as one of 4 tabs and homepages. I click my "Inbox" from
my Google start page and it goes to Gmail, within the original tab.
Good so far. I check Gmail, and when I am ready to go back to my
Google start page (rather than keeping my Gmail tab open) I click the
"Google" tab in the left corner of Gmail, and it opens up an entirely
new instance of Firefox. It does not simply go back to Google start
within the same Firefox tab. Seems kind of weird.

I have Firefox set to open a new tab whenever a link would open a new window.  Try that.  It doesn't solve the problem of using the same window, but at least it won't open a new instance of Firefox.

Right click on the link and select Open in a new tab?

It works fine for me, just annoying that it doesn't open automatically in a new tab, as per the FF settings.

I suggest downloading an extension that enables gestures. I have this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/39/ If You have it downloaded than configure it to open the link in a new tab. By default if right clicked and dragged up the link is opened in new tab.

For future reference, it would be nice for you to tell us about what you're linking to.
