I'd like to save a gmail  I've written as a file on my hard drive. That used to b e possible, but it looks like the options have been discontinued. I've looked at several options which were described, but it seems that none of these are currently available, except that it might be possible to save as a PDF file on Drive - but not possible to save to the computer's HD. Is there some way to do it  currently?

I don't remember ever being able to do that -- to 'save' a message directly on my drive.

We have always had the ability to "print" a message or a conversation and then Save as PDF.  That is what I do.

If you want the entire message including all headers, one can use Show Original (from the pull-down menu), and then save that.  But that's not so useful anymore, with formatted messages and all that.

At the moment, I  just need to print a single long email. Printing to PDF would be fine, and I looked that up, but the option doesn't seem to be present when I click the little "print all" icon at upper right of the email. The only choice I get is to print to my own printer or to a Microsoft XPS document. I looked up the Labs, which I think used to have a Save option, but it's not there now. How do you get a gmail to print to PDF?

Typically that's a browser option, I know Chrome does it, haven't used Firefox in a long time, but since they copy all the good stuff Google does, they should have it as well.  IE might be limited to the options you saw.

Okay - a browser option then. Can you lead me through how I'd print a gmail in Chrome or IE? I  have no idea how that would work. Sorry to sound so ignorant, but I guess I need hand holding.

In Chrome:

Pulldown menu -> Print (or use the "Print All" icon)

Next to Destination, click "Change..." button.

Under Local Destinations, one of the choices should be "Save as PDF".  It is probably at the top of the list.  Click it.  (This option is not a Windows printer device, it is built-in to Chrome itself.)  *

Look over the settings (Portrait, etc.).

"Save" button.

Box comes up -- choose a folder/filename.  Press "OK".

(*)  If you don't have the "Save as PDF" option available, I don't know why.  I have a couple of "print to PDF" drivers also installed on this computer, and it is not either of them and does not use them.  I see nothing in Chrome Settings that affects it.  It's just "there", and I think it was there from the day I installed Chrome.  I save webpages to PDF all the time and it uses the same "Save as PDF" device.

Regards,
Andy

Hi Bill

If you connect to your Gmail using Thunderbird with IMAP, you can then right-click>Save As to save the email into a .eml file. This is essentially the raw, original email source contained in a text file.

I would recommend this method as it saves the email in it's entirety including the all-important headers.

Cheers
