This is bizarre. Last week several emails that I sent out had EVERY
single letter "T" removed from every part if the email. Today, its
the letter "O"

Has anyone seen this before? I know I'm typing correctly and the
letters are there when I hit the send button. YOu can reply to me
directly or to the group.

Thanks,

Burt

You may want to run a virus scan.......

Extremely unlikely. More likely cause is a bad keyboard driver, or a
stuck key. Possibly a misbehaving application stealing keystrokes from
the foreground application.

This exact thing happened to me a few days ago. First it was the
letter "r" and then it was he letter "o". When I created the e-mail,
it was fine. But later when my friend replied with a "huh?" I
checked my sent box and it was screwed up there...so Im pretty sure it
is a gmail problem. I am also a MAC user and therefore I know it
isnt virus related. The one thing I considered tis that I am running
the latest Safari beta. So I thought that somehow since gmail works
by capturing key events, that my browser is screwing it up. What
browser are you using? I have also noted that g-mail has been taking
a looooong time to send e-mail sometimes but this may be a separate
issue as it started before the browser change or the missing letters.
Well, if you have any ideas or find the solution to this bizarre
problem, please share.

You might be on the right track. Those are keyboard shortcuts built into Gmail (r is reply, o is open). See what happens if you use Camino/FF.

Sorry I didn't see your message, Burt.

You have described exactly the same symptoms and conditions that I have experienced.
I am also running Safari 3 beta on a MAC.  Gmail also can take along time to send an email; but I have attributed that to the large attachments that I typically include.

I have noticed that the missing letters typically will occur when replying to a email with multiple threads of previous emails imbedded into the body.

Maybe we should report this to Apple as a bug in Safari 3 beta.

That sounds plausible. Only I just checked the list of keyboard
shortcuts and "t" is not one of them. Burt reported having that
problem with the letter "t" so I am not sure that shortcut keystrokes
are what is causing it. It happens at raqndom (seemingly) so I can not
be sure that it would happen or not if using another browser. It does
not happen with every e-mail I send.
Also, does anyone else have the problem where when typing in this
message board system, their keystrokes take about 1 second for each
key to type in their browser? I type fast and then have to wait a
minute to watch the letters manifest on the screen one by one about
one second apart.
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

When I have the problem of letter's appearing slowly after I type,
it's usually the result of high CPU utilization (the computer is
really busy).

One commonality I'm hearing here from this and other threads of the
missing letters is they all seem to be running Safari on MAC. Safari
on MAC is only a supported browser at v1.3
<https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6557&topic=1524>.
And I've heard a few mentions of Safari 3.0beta. Since GMail is
actually a web application, and is essentially downloaded and run on
your computer, if there is a problem with GMail working on Safari,
those could easily be symptoms.

I would try loading Firefox, or any other browser, to see if that
definitely clears it up. If not, try going to your local library and
use your GMail account on one of those machines (be sure to Sign Out
so you don't leave your cookie there for people to use). If you have
the same problem on another machine, it's Google, if another browser
fixes it, it's Safari.

Any other MAC users here, running Safari 3.0, that can report they
have never had a problem?

Just want to add my experience:
On a Mac running Safari 3.0.2.
I've had the same "missing letters" thing happen over the last two
weeks -- a vanishing "o" in one email thread, then a "t" in
another....just now it happened with "a"...
(Third time's the charm -- I started looking for answers and found
this group.)
...but it only happens in a reply email to an existing thread -- and
then the missing letter vanishes **from the entire existing thread**
not just my most recent email.

To whom do we report this obvious (but scattershot) bug?

Hi, I'm running Safari 2.4.0 on my Mac. I've had no problems
whatsoever. I'm also using the Notifier and Calendar with no problems
at all. Amy

Since this seems to be a Safari 3 bug (I've heard reports of people
using Safari 2 with no problems) I'd say, report it to whoever
receives bug reports for Safari 3. Since it's apparently Beta, there
should be a common bug reporting process available to all Beta
testers. (Sorry, no longer a MAC user, and never a Safari user here).

So far it has been reported that it has happened with Safari 3 beta
users and has happened with the letters "o" "r" "t" and "a". Does
anyone else have anything to report about missing letters ? I want
to make my report thorough.
Also, this slow typing is definitely not high CPU utilization as every
other program runs instantly while Im using this. So that may be
another Safari 3 thing. Anyone else?

That about sums it up.  I have turned off the keyboard shortcuts under settings just to be sure (maybe I should turn them on????)

I have also noticed slow typing at times (but not while I'm writting this email) and also the slow send times are usually evident.

Thanks for the follow up for us.

I was thinking that maybe we have developed an international shortage
of common letters in certain fonts, due to overuse. It's hard to
imagine that there are enough "e"s in New Times Roman to go around.

I am another Safari 3.0.2 user whose letter R's disappeared after I
sent a message using gmail, which appeared normal on send. Just
thought I'd pipe in.

Can I add Safari 3.0.3 and the letters m, then n to the mix. I'm
switching to Camino while this blows over, but will be back on Safari
later, as I prefer it. My best guess, since this seems to be limited
to gmail and seems so specific, is a rogue programmer at google with a
grudge, doing a browser detect and being quite annoying to Safari 3
beta users.

If this is the case, I wish google the best of luck finding the code
and repairing the damage done. If this is the work of some malicious
programmer, I hope they are brought to task. I have used gmail for job
applications in the past and would hate to have missed out on a good
job because some idiot wants to make a bit of noise.

Uh, no. I would bet my life savings that isn't the case. This is likely just a case of:
  1. Gmail does not fully support Safari (IE and Firefox-based browsers are the only fully supported ones)
  2. Safari 3.0.3 is in beta, which by definition means it probably still has a few problems. Gmail is extraordinary complex and could easily be finding a bug that few other sites would.
  3. If it was a browser detect that intentionally discriminated against Safari, anyone in the world (not just Google) could see the code causing it (as it would have to be client-side Javascript). Someone would have a raised a fit by now, there are a lot of people out there who look at code like that for fun.
No need to look for a conspiracy theory.

I see this thread is not fresh, but thought I'd add that with Safari
3.0.3 on Mac, I've had missing o's, g's, t's and n's. Only in lower
case -- uppercase T's were present in the email where lowercase t's
were erased. Haven't checked to see if this is accurate or just a
product of when I email most, but I have noticed this happening when I
send emails on Saturdays.

Has there been any word on resolution of this problem? I see this
thread was most active back in July, yet this is still happening. ?!

Thanks on the recommendation of Camino.
cheers, Larks
