What is the difference between these?

I am guessing that the New Inbox Categories has evolved from the Smartlabels lab. When I turn on the lab, Gmail prompts me to select a category for your post, and has 'Forums' selected. The categories are the same as the New Inbox ones.

The original Smartlabels consisted of Bulk, Notification or Forum.  Only Forum is in the new categories.  As I've written elsewhere, all these labels and categories are confusing and redundant.

Regarding the Smartlabels lab, I've had that enabled for a long time but don't remember how it works.  I reviewed in Labs that these are labeled automatically, but how did Smartlabels know to use Notification rather than something else?  You wrote, Marko:  "When I turn on the lab, Gmail prompts me to select a category for your post, and has 'Forums' selected."  I don't recall this procedure at all.  I guess I don't need to review it unless I decide not to use the new categories in the Inbox.

Finally, the Smartlabels lab says Report mis-categorized email from the 'Reply' dropdown menu.  At the moment, I can't find this menu.  Maybe it's time for bed.

That's why I don't use them.

I have my own labels.

I assume Google figures out which Dumb... I mean Smartlabel to use, by scanning incoming messages and looking for keywords or phrases.  Something that looks like a notification (presumably of an upcoming event) is given the Notification label.

That must be the drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the message, with the small down-pointing triangle/pyramid, next to the curved arrow that means Reply.  I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.  I think you're right about what it was time to do: Zzzz.  :-)

Thank you very much for the thorough reply, Andy.  Just wondering if you are (or were) a teacher because of your clarity in explaining where the Miscategorization option is.   I just couldn't remember (or figure out, obviously) where it was even though I have used it in the past.  Even though this wasn't vital, I am inquisitive by nature and appreciate your putting that to rest.

Funny thing:  Even though all this labeling is redundant, I do like the new Inbox categories.  My other Gmail friends don't know about it yet; I did only because of the Official Gmail Blog.  Do you know if this is going to be introduced "at large," perhaps in the same manner a the new interface has been?  And will the latter eventually be required?  How many more questions do I get?

I have to agree with you Diane, I quite like it too. It is definitely also faster than opening up labels from the left menu.

I don't know if it's faster for me, Marko, because I had my labels (on the far left) set to show only if unread.  Therefore, they were in bold, organized, and noticeable that way.  However, the new way seems more convenient to me.  I wonder if this will remain optional.  As resistant to change as I am in some ways, it is fun to try out these new things.

Speaking of which, In the case of the new v. old interface for composing a message, I have gone back and forth several times for long stays.  I have been using the old for a few weeks again but recall that the new didn't offer much in benefits and sometimes required an extra step.  That is not an improvement.  I think the canned responses worked better.
