Firstly, I auto-forward my Gmail to another account which does not use
SSL so that I can easily use my AV scanner on all email received.

I also have many filters in place to "Skip the Inbox" and delete the
messages which are obvious Spam... Within the past week, messages
that should have been deleted are being sent to Trash alright but they
are being forwarded to the non-SSL account which fortunately traps
them as Spam...

Here's an example of one of these filters:
"Has the words:" debt
"Skip the Inbox (archive it)"
"Delete it"

For the past week to 10 days; messages that "should" have hit this
filter apparently haven't as they end of Trash as they should but also
have been forwarded...

What's seems to be happening? What is this "auto-delete" that I keep
reading about?

Well, first off...telling it to archive, and delete the same message is counter intuitive and is going to end with GMail deleting it.  Because you are telling GMail to delete the message, it isn't going to forward it because you are telling it that you don't want it.

GMail also has a built in virus scanner that scans every attachment every time you open a message that contains an attachment.  It also doesn't load embedded images unless you tell it to.

Yes Nick I understand that it's counter intuitive however; if I
uncheck "Skip Inbox" and then save or update the filter, GMail
rechecks it... In other words you're "Skip Inbox"... This may be
where the problem is...

I've read this thread before and I posed the question in my original
post: "Where is this 'auto-delete' that I keep hearing about..." I
see no such thing when either creating or editing and existing filter?

By auto delete I simply meant a filter which deletes a message
automatically (as yours do). If you remove the delete part of the
filter, it should work fine.

Thanks Ryan for that clarification... Auto-delete to me has a whole
different meaning but that another story for another time...

I tried what you suggested and it didn't work... I even created a
couple of new filters and they don't work either...

I can only conclude that Google did something that has rendered my
filters useless... Maybe they changed the processing sequence to
where 'auto forwarding' takes precedence over filtering... Not know
what goes on in the background, I can't say with any certainty...

Fortunately the non-SSL account that I'm forwarding them to is
trapping what Google isn't...

It is something that Google needs to look into though IMHO!
