All,

Recently, I have found out I am missing quite a few mails in my Gmail
account.

I am using the Web version ONLY, so there is no mail client sync
issue. I have been a Gmail user since 2004 and my usage is close to
30% of capacity.

I noticed recently that some mails never reached me. I checked SPAM,
Trash and disabled all the rules I had. Still, the problem persists.
It was pretty random, for example, once my wife replied to my message
from her Gmail account and I didn't see it.

Today, it was my cousin who said she replied to an ongoing thread.

I have checked Gmail Help forum and saw a few threads about this
topic. But none had any obvious explanation or solution. Any one can
help? Is it time to switch?

Thanks,

Bing

I'm sorry to inform you that no tech (at least one employed by Google)
reads this user's group.

I will point out that you need to remember to check the settings for
"leaving mail on server" within GMail, as Google does not respond to
the settings on your POP client (iPhone; which Google actually
recommends you use IMAP so you don't have this sort of problem. Read

I've never heard of anyone successfully getting Google to retrieve
mails they accidentally erased and permanently deleted; but have heard
of and seen messages that mysteriously disappeared, because of
something Google did, reappear.

The only contact to GMail "support" is through the Help Center and
their official Google Groups (like GHD which is linked to the Help
Center).

The last 5 months worth of emails have disappeared from my gmail, it
jumps from August straight to December now. I know the emails were
there as i have replied to some and others were important documents
that i needed. So basically, they have just gone from my inbox without
me deleting or moving anything.
Question is, does anybody know why this may be and how i may be able
to retrieve missing mail.

If they have really disappeared without any action by you, then it is probably a problem at Gmail.  There is nothing that you can do.  This is a Beta product and therefore you should never have important documents there, without a backup elsewhere. But we all do it, being only human.

There are people who have had disappeared emails suddenly reappear.  That is logical, if Gmail had a problem with a server, and had to replace it, files could be lost.  But since they doubtless have RAID systems and multiple backups, those files could be recovered when the problem is solved.  But don't hold your breath.  And there is no way that you can influence the situation.

Hindsight is 20-20, but if you have all your Gmail forwarded to a
Livemail (or Yahoo--you can't forward to both) address that you set
up, you'll have (from now on) a backup of all your email that doesn't
depend on either your hard drive staying operable or, arguably, some
sorts of mistakes/failures at Google.

If I have my G-Mail account syncing automatically with my Outlook
Client via IMAP configuration and
e-mail mysteriously disappears from G-Mail, will it also disappear
from my Outlook Client on the next
sync ?

Thanks

Bonnie
