I use gmail for my kids and they don't need to see what is being
filtered into the trash.
There is so much garbage being sent to them. The filters work great,
but I just want the trash to empty daily.
Is there something I'm missing or is this just an impossibility with
gmail? And how hard can in be for them to write this into the program?
Maybe I'm the only gmailer that wants to get rid of unwanted trash
immediately.

It's not possible to change it to behave as such, but you can take
steps to get like you want.

If they're accessing it via the web, and you are as well, you can just
click to the trash view and click the link to Empty Trash. I
personally access my son's account through IMAP when I want to as my
Thunderbird can have the multiple accounts loaded simultaneously.

Google offers tips at this link, where they remind you that officially
no one under the age of 13 should have an account:

I was 10 when I got introduced to email. Porn junk mail didn't start coming in until I was 13. And even then, it didn't bother me. Schoolwork was a higher priority, so what if I got a few porn emails? At age 13, I was still smart enough to figure out "HM, that has nothing to do with schoolwork! *deletes* Ok, back to work...."

At age 19 now, nothing's really changed. Junk mail? Spam label it. On with the rest of my life.

Just teach the concept of "moving on" to your kids. I'm sure it'll be easier for not only your kids, but for you as well, as a responsible parent.

Wow - you got some really unhelpful responses. That's pretty unusual
for this forum.

My suggestion is a greasemonkey script. I'm assuming here that your
kids are accessing gmail as webmail at the gmail site, and not using a
mail app. You could try a mail app, and set it not to download
anything in the spam folder or the trash folder. But if you still
want to use webmail, look for a greasemonkey script that does what you
want.

I only looked for a few minutes, but I found one that would eliminate
the spam count, which might work very well for you, on an out-of-sight-
out-of-mind basis.

You might be able to find exactly what you want, though, with more
searching. Good luck!

How was Zack's response not helpful?  It answered the question completely while offering a solution as well.  The question was "How can I have GMail delete the trash every day", not "how can I hide the number  of spam and/or trashed emails".
