I'm assuming that you are using a mail client and trying to fetch via POP. Any reason why you're not using IMAP?

Did you also empty the Trash folder?

This is a very vague description of what is happening.  I can't tell what's going on.

Are you using a mail client program on your PC to download messages from your Gmail account?

Are you using your Gmail account to download messages from another mail account that you own?

Does the error message come from the mail client program on your PC?  Or does it come from Gmail?  At what point do you see that message?

If you are using Gmail to download (fetch) messages from another account, that "error" message may be normal.  Gmail will not download huge numbers of messages all in one long run.  It downloads some, pauses, and tries again the next hour, or the next day.
