I've seen this question asked. I've never seen
an answer that works.

I've tried the gmail options for pop3.

They're:

Disable forwarding
Forward a copy of INCOMING mail

POP Download:
1. Status: POP is enabled for ALL mail that has arrived since 12/14/04
Enable POP for ALL mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)
Enable POP only for mail that arrives FROM NOW ON
Disable POP

So, I can:

Forward INCOMING mail

Enable POP3 for ALL mail
or only email FROM NOW ON.

I don't seem to have the option to selectively choose WHICH email
other than those choices. So I, by the options provided can either get
EVERYTHING or only INCOMING email from this point forward.

I like and use GMAIL for it's capacity and the fact that it's online
and
affords me that flexibility. But as far as functionality it's still
very much
a work in progress.

I've tried using external pop3 programs (freepops and email2pop with
both frustrating and disappointing results.

Anyone?

I dont really understand what you are asking for in terms of the pop3 download option.  It seems to me to be adequate; either download everything or new emails from this point forward.  So you want more options for downloading emails to pop3 OTHER than "everything" or "emails from now on"?  I'm not sure what else they could do.  That seems fine to me, i just selected emails from now on.  Could you enlighten us as to what exactly you are suggesting?  Thanks

If I understand correctly, he only wants to download mails from his
GMail inbox not mails that are archived. I can't think of any way to
do this currently.

What I am suggesting is the option of perhaps pop3 by filter or by
label. Something which allows not for EVERYTHING or from now
on, but specifically selected emails and NO others.

For example, in Windows Explorer there is either the option to
use Shift-Click to select ALL or Ctrl-Click to Cherry pick items.

There seems to be no cherry pick option for Pop3.

In other words, say, I want to apply pop3 only to emails I've
labeled "Special Project" for instance.

Based on the options given, I can't. I can just either pop3
from this point forward or ALL emails.

Now if I have over 500 emails in Gmail and only 25 in "Special
Project", I have to take ALL 500 to get the 25 I need.

If they're older emails, there's no way to get them using only
the "from now on" option.

Make more sense.?

Correct. The protocol is not set up to work that way. That said,
there are mail programs that let you set up to download just the
headers, select from the headers the mail you want to download, then
download them and mark the others "read". When it is marked "read" on
the GMail server is when it no longer shows available for download.
Unfortunately the more popular POP3 reading programs (at least the
Microsoft ones) don't offer this option... it is a client-side issue.
I haven't personally used Thunderbird, and haven't used Eudora in over
a decade, but they might offer an option more to your liking. Or do an
online search for "selective POP3 download".

It's possible with a program like the ones I recommended above that you
could write a filter to automatically decide which ones to download and
which not.

That's where the "Download all" option in GMail comes in. Once you
have your selective download program set up, turn your GMail POP3 to
ALL MESSAGES, and it will be able to get your older ones as well.

Yes. Hopefully my answers do as well.

You could forward all mails that are labeled (with a filter) to a
second GMail account and use POP3 to access this account.
Unfortunately this solution will not work for mails that you manually
label as "Special Project", only for mails that are filtered upon
receipt, labeled and then have a copy forwarded to the second GMail
account.

POP3 is a protocol for handling mail. It seems that Google has somehow
distorted it somewhat.

In any event, what you need is an intelligent MUA that can sort on the
criteria you want. Unfortunately, I do do not believe that any MUA could
decipher Google's labels. If this were an IMAP system, there would not
be any difficulty in what you are attempting to do. It is possible to
install IMAP side-by-side with POP3, therefore it might behoove Google
to consider taking that approach.
