HIccup with imap in Thunderbird

Periodically, Thunderbird prompts me for a password for my gmail.com,
but rejects the correct password. What happens is I get an endless
loop of error message/prompts:

- Mail Server password required for bra...@gmail.com@imap.gmail.com

(which I do) and ask Password Manager to remember it

Alert: Login to server imap.gmail.com failed

So I clock on OK

password request again...

After a period, it clears up and lets me access my mail again.

I've checked CAPS LOCK and my password. I can get into gmail on the
web. Nothing seems to help except if I shut down Thunderbird and come
back to my email account sometime later. This has happened over the
past week, maybe twice a day.

Does anyone know what is going on?

My Grandmother had a similar problem with Thunderbird at one point,
and it turned out that she apparently had an incorrect password in her
cache that was causing it. Go to the Thunderbird password manager and
remove all references to your GMail account. Then close Thunderbird
and re-open it. This time, when it prompts for the password,
carefully enter it correctly, and use the remember box to keep it.
This worked for her account.

the parts which I've highlighted are set to similar values. (If anyone
can see a wrong setting I've used, please say so before I lead people
astray!)

SMTP should be set for TLS, not SSL per this:
