When I try to add my Gmail account to my iOS 7 Mail accounts, it always tells me that either my address or password are incorrect. However, I installed the Gmail app and it connects successfully using the same credentials. Is there any way to add my Gmail account to the regular iOS Mail accounts?

This is for an iPad Air running iOS 7.0.4

Thank you.

GMail stopped doing MS Exchange (the protocol the iOS mail wants to use) because MS was charging them a fee.  You need to use the GMail App.

That's not true at all (the part about iOS wanting to use EAS). The Mail app uses IMAP when adding a Gmail account, nothing else. Adding a Gmail Apps account using EAS is done via the 'Exchange' option.

MS is charging Google a fee? Since when? How about my old free Apps accounts that I am still able to connect to using EAS, albeit from the one single device?

True, it will use IMAP if you pick GMail; but the help page still suggested you use Exchange so you get calendar and contacts too; at least recently it still did; and that's what I was referring to.

This article explains them stopping the service for free accounts; but not turning it OFF if you already had it working; just no new devices:

And just for you Marko about the patent fees; check the first link:

I quote from Tim, the OP: "Is there any way to add my Gmail account to the regular iOS Mail accounts?"

Yes I know, we've been through this already in another thread. If Microsoft are now charging per user license fees then why would Google still allow *any* free users to still use Google Sync (EAS)?

And just for you Marko about the patent fees; check the first link:

HAHA thanks yes I did Google that already and I find no evidence to suggest what you allege, ie: "GMail stopped doing MS Exchange (the protocol the iOS mail wants to use) because MS was charging them a fee."

You also tell the OP that "You need to use the GMail App". This is not true. The Mail app works just fine using IMAP.

You need to enable IMAP in Gmail. From the help page:

  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Click the  gear in the top right.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  5. Select Enable IMAP.
  6. Click Save Changes.

Thanks for the info, but I am not using a Windows phone nor am I trying to sync anything except my Gmail. All I want to do is connect my Gmail through iOS mail accounts.

Marko, that must not be my problem. When I went to change the setting, IMAP was already enabled. Then I went on through to the help screens on using Gmail with iPhone, iPod, or iPad, and it told me to do exactly what I've been trying to do.

I still appreciate your advice.

Marko,
He is correct about Google being charged a fee.  Actually any company that allows ActiveSync to be used in their software must pay Microsoft a licensing fee to use that protocol.  Since there are so many Gmail users, I guess Google decided it wasn't worth the price of the licensing fee.  I have found using IMAP is perfectly fine with iOS.

Zack,
That isn't 100% correct.  Yes, Google has stopped allowing users to use ActiveSync which is what Exchange uses to sync mail.
This change was only for new connections, if you had an existing connection setup it continued to work.  Also, if you have a paid Google Apps account you can still use ActiveSync to sync your Google mail, contacts, and calendar.  From iOS you would use the Exchange option to use ActiveSync.  But, when setting up a new mail account in iOS just select the Google option.  This will sync your mail with IMAP, your calendar with CalDAV, and your contacts with CardDAV.  It sets this all up automatically for you.  I am not using this method over the ActiveSync and it works perfectly and very easy to setup.

Tim,
From the iPhone, go into Mail, click on Add Account, and select Google.  It will ask for your name, e-mail address, and password.  Once it connects it will ask if you want to sync mail, contacts, calendar, and notes.  Select the ones you want to sync and then hit Next.  It should work.

Jeff, I am not denying the fact that EAS is a licensed product that Google pays for.
I was asking why Zack says this is the reason for Google dropping it, since as per the article he mentions, EAS has been licensed to Google since early 2009.

Even Microsoft claims to have been surprised by this move, but this could just be politics. See
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57559813-75/microsoft-very-surprised-by-googles-exchange-activesync-ouster/

I am rather glad that Google are opting for open standards but EAS is still a very good system.

Right. Perhaps try turning off the IMAP access, save the settings and then turn it back on.

Try also add it as 'other' on the iOS 'Add Account' screen and then add it as a generic IMAP account as per the settings for 'Other' client selection.

I'd read a blog when trying to turn on GMail access from a Windows 8 computer using the same EAS, and it indicated that was the reason; and it would make sense.  I couldn't find that page again; so I only posted the ones I saw.  And admit my overstatement that it wouldn't work.

I finally got it fixed by following the instructions in this post: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/gmail/Hykf1d7KxaM

It was indeed related to 2-step verification, as I had guessed some time ago.

I do not have 2 step verification, but still have the same issue for the last couple of days.

But did you try logging into the web interface, as suggested earlier in this thread?  From time to time, it happens where a web login in required before other connections are allowed to resume.

I logged in on my pc, changed the password, deleted the mail account a couple of times on my iphone and set in up again, nothing worked. Weirdly I can send emails (from my iphone) with the mail app, although I get the message that my password is incorrect, but I cannot receive mail.

Did you try the suggestion of turning off IMAP and turning it back on in the web interface?  It's possible it's not remembering that IMAP is enabled when the phone tries to get it.

Sending and receiving are different servers, so that's very easy to explain.
