It's another Phishing expedition!!
Gmail/Google *know* your username and password. Why would they ask you
to provide it again?
And really, do you imagine that Google truly wants to randomly close
down accounts?

good grief..anyone who falls for this type of OBVIOUS scam really
deserves to lose their account..it is bone headed business to give out
any password at all to an email contact you dont know..and google has
always said, they will NEVER ask you for this info.

It is easy to say it is an obvious scam with the benefit of Knowlege and expereince.
I don't think anyone deserves to lose their account, however obvious the scam may appear to be, or however "stupid" the mistake they make.
As we all probably remember, for people that are new to computing and the World Wide Web, it is a very steep learning curve; and we all have to start learning somewhere.

Never trust E-mails that ask for passwords and personal details.
Never follow any links in this type of Email..
Report to Gmail it as Phishing - click the little arrow next to reply, then click "Report Phising".
It is a good idea to regularly change your Gmail password; make sure it is a strong password - no names or dictionary words; do not use it for any other service or account.
You may get similar e-mails pretending to come from your bank
*****
This is what a Google employee has said about this type of phishing scam:

Mike CH
Google Employee

OK, basic things everyone needs to know

1) Google does not randomly delete Gmail accounts

2) Any address that ends in @gmail.com is a consumer account just like yours. Anyone can sign up for anyt...@gmail.com - we have some rules that try to stop obvious scams, so for instance we forbid Gmail accounts with the word "google" in them, but that doesn't stop these scammers from using the nearest names they can get.

3) Emails from Google the company (as opposed to a user of the Gmail service) will end in @google.com

The Gmail team will not send you email about your account (ever) exactly because of scams like this. If we need to communicate with you, you'll find a message appears as part of the Gmail user interface itself, or when you sign in.

Hello Sarah

Appreciate your positive and balanced approach to the mentioned problem. Thanks for your politeness too. I am also one of those who is not so net savvy, yet willing to learn many things as I come across new things in the internet world almost everyday.

When you mentioned"Report Phising", I could not find this option on my email set up, is it the same as" Report Spam"? Let me know.

Thanks

Surekha

It is not the same as "Report Spam".

"Report Phishing" is not a visible button; it is a menu item. In the
upper right corner of the message you are reading, just to the right
of the "Reply" button, there is a small downward pointing arrow or
triangle. This is the drop-down menu. Click it (the triangle, not
the Reply button). There, you will find "Report Phishing" as one of
the choices.

This sort of thing is NEVER legitimate. When you see a warning like this, from anyone, delete it or report it as Phishing.

Will come up with more querries later. Do you have info on Transliteration matters. I went to google and downloaded the software for our regional language. Somehow I am not sure how to start using the software. Is it possibe to explain the process? Or is this question outside the Google perameters?

Thanks

Surekha,

The stated purpose of this group is "Description: Talk about Gmail, good or bad.", and I don't see what relation there is between GMail and Transliteration, so I'd personally say that it's outside the parameters of this user's group.  I'm sure there is a group about Google products and/or the Transliteration software specifically that could be of help to you.

Surekha,

You should start a new thread with this question. i'm sorry I don't have any experience with this; but there is a link to Gmail help, for using trasliteration in gmail here:

Zack,
I don't entirely agree with you.

Transliteration is a Gmail service; so surely it is within the scope of this group?

While Surekha's question is asking for help, it is also asking for information.
If another thread is started, people with experience of using this gmail feature may have useful and relevant comments and experience to contribute.

While the stated purpose of this group is "discussion", many people come here with questions and problems. Is providing help is beyond the remit of this group, and if so, should I stop answering questions where the OP might incur some benefit from my reply?

Sarah,

To be fair, what I said was "I don't see what relation there is between GMail and Transliteration"  *I* still don't really see a relation between transliteration software, and GMail, but there are references to Transliteration in the GMail help, so the problem with seeing the relation is mine. :)

In your definition of discussion does the process of question and answer not figure in?  It does in mine, so I see a relation between asking questions (about GMail), stating problems (with GMail), and answering questions and the purpose of this group... Discussion.  My point with the prior posting is that I didn't (and still don't personally) see how a question about Transliteration software downloaded from Google had anything to do with GMail.  Again, I'm apparently wrong, but I also don't see anyone jumping to help this person either (out of the nearly 20,000 members we have), so my advice to search for other groups is still valid.  I would hope that if there is a group titled "Transliteration-Users" that they would DEFINITELY be able to help.  I would not ask the question of this group on how to cook Steak Tartar, though there are probably people who know.  I would post questions about the "Quick Links" lab, but if I don't get answers, or perhaps even while waiting for answers, I'd post the same to the "Quick Links" group where I DEFINITELY expect to get an answer.

Zack, thanks for your response.
I think the advice you proffered is useful & sound (as usual). icon_bow.gif
I have to admit, my query was rather pedantic and also a little tongue in cheek; I hope I caused no offense.
Naturally, I expect discussion to include questions & answers; it would be pretty slim pickings othewise!
The distinction I struggle with is - at what point does giving help or advice outstrip the purpose and aims of this group, and become more rightfully the territory of the help forums?

I wonder how many of
those 20,000 regularly read the group's posts.

Enough of this off topic aside, anyway.

Sarah

I don't consider this off topic, we are still talking about GMail I think :)

As text is hard to read tone, I wasn't aware you were in-check, so I took your post mostly seriously.  I took no offense, and was trying to be sure you didn't either.

I've always thought giving help and advice was exactly the purpose of this group, as long as it's about GMail and not other computer, or Google products; and even then people still ask questions and get their help.  You have to remember that this group is actually older than most of the official help forums; but the distinction is that Google officially answers within them, while we have no Google Employees here.*

* I actually think we do have a couple, but they never mention that they're employees, don't use an official google.com e-mail address, and don't speak on-behalf of Google if/when they post.

As far as the member count.  I'd say that probably less than half are regular readers, and under 100 are frequent posters; but I'd like to think there are a large number of lurkers that do get some benefit from our postings.
