I have my Treo 700P from Sprint setup to receive Gmail. I'm using the
free VersaMail client. I'm able to receive and send messages fine,
however whenever I delete a message on the Treo and synchronize it does
not delete the message from Gmail. Similarly, if I delete a message in
Gmail, it does not delete from the Treo.

I have the following option checked in Versamail Preferences (under
Server)

"Delete mail on the server after deleting from Versamail"

I've even tried to manually delete mail from the Trash and when
prompted

"Permanently delte all selected messages from both the handhled and the
server, or from just the handheld?" I always select "Both."

When prompted: "Would you like to update the server now to avoid delays
getting and sending mail later?" I say yes. When my Treo connects to
the server and says that it is "Synch Palm Changes" it doesn't appear
that it actually synched anything. My message is then deleted from my
Treo but when I refresh Gmail the message is still there.

FYI, as far as all the other setting in Gmail and Treo, I have followed
guidelines others have set and my settings in VersaMail are as follows:

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server -pop.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Use Authentication (APOP): No
Port: 995

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
smtp.gmail.com
Use SSL: Yes
Use Authentication (ESMTP): Yes
Port: 587

Also, I also have the Treo set to "Leave mail on server after
downloading to VersaMail"

It's not clear to me if the deletion is suppose to work both (delete
on Gmail then it deletes on Treo) but based on Treo's Versamail's
settings I would expect that if I have it set to delete on both the
Treo and the Gmail server it should delete from Gmail server.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what may be the problem with
synchronizing deletions? Thanks!

Gmail has a slightly non-standard way of using POP, as it ignores what the client tells it to do in terms of deletion. The only way to mostly do what you want is by going to Gmail's Settings->POP and Forwarding page and telling Gmail to either archive or delete messages after you have downloaded them onto your Treo.

Thanks for that insight. I just changed my "Leave mail on server after
downloading to Versamail" to unchecked and noticed that despite this
change any mail that comes into my Treo STILL stays on the Gmail sever.
Is this another quirk with Gmail or do I have a problem?

Actually I thought the same thing till I re-read the RFC... the RFC
say's it's acceptable for POP servers to automatically delete messages
after they've been downloaded regardless of the client's command.
This is the behaviour GMail's servers are imitating, except instead of
actually deleting it, they take your action from the settings page,
and remove the message from the downloadable list.

Same deal... Gmail is just ignoring what your Treo tells it to do. (which, in this case, is nothing)
