I enter recipient. I would prefer, next

I hit Tab.

Goes to Cc: Field, rather than Subject Field.

I get to Subject Field with two Tabs.

Why not?

Because pressing Tab brings you to the next item, and CC is the next
item, not Subject.

Misunderstood, Andy.

As I stated (see below), I would prefer that Tab take me to the "next item," which is Cc: field.

It, in fact, does not work this way, as you and I would expect it to.  But thank you for effort to clarify.

Try it, and report back.

Do you have CC expanded?  When I begin to compose a brand new message, CC is collapsed and reads as "Add CC", so it's not the next item, it's a link, instead of a form field.  When I've clicked "add cc" THEN the next item is the CC field.

I agree, Zack.  Cc: is not a form field, until I move mouse to "enliven" it.  I guess I'm wishing it was already alive when I hit "Compose," so I wouldn't hafta' mess with mousey.  And then could Tab twice [quickly] to jump over it.  I admit, then everybody would hafta', and maybe don't wanna'.  Answer might lie in allowing users to set default Tab fields.  Maybe as easy as, that's how it stays, until I "Remove Cc: Field."  Whaddya' think?

I would be more agreeable to default tab fields than having CC expanded automatically.  I RARELY use CC, and often use BCC, so that would be my choice, but as a friend to many software programmers I can see a good reason not to.  "You give the user too many options to turn on or off, and they then complain that it's too difficult to use."  I know GMail has long striven to keep this simple.

Agree with Zack. Lucky Gmail separate more function in labs so a user doesn't have to be advanced knowledge just to set the settings.

That's an excellent point.  It would be very simple to make a lab (Google must implement) or greasemonkey script, or extension to "Auto Click CC field", or make it customizable to auto-click any of the links like "Edit Subject" or "Attach a file".

Hmmm, you are right about that, it doesn't go from "To:" to the "Add
Cc" link next; it goes to the next open box, which is the message text
box (if CC wasn't already open).

But if you keep tabbing, it does eventually bring you around to the
"Add Cc", the "Add Bcc", and then "Edit Subject" links. No mousing
required. They just aren't the next ones in the queue if they weren't
already open. I'm guessing that order might be because people tend to
go straight to the message editing box (and then from there to the
"Send" button), than those that want to add CC or BCC recipients.

I've never seen the tab order being user-configurable in a Windows application.

I don't know if this is something hard-wired into Windows, or the web
browser, or if Gmail itself sets the order. It does seem to want to
do the open boxes first, before going to the links between the boxes,
so maybe that order is built into Windows (just guessing).

Although it's not listed in keyboard shortcuts, press d to compose a message with the Cc box open, and b for both Cc and Bcc.

d works fine, but b does nothing.

Hold down SHIFT when you click Forward or SHIFT-F if you have keyboards shortcuts enabled. This will open the forward compose interface in a new smaller window, leaving your list where it was in the main window.
